I've had a few emails, tweets and HoL messages over the past few days from people saying they're unable to access HoL.
Thanks to Mark and Justin, we seem to have tracked down an issue with McAfee security software. In both these two cases the McAfee firewall settings had blocked access to HoL (How dare it! I shall be writing to McAfee immediately!).
For anyone else having this issue, Justin kindly sent me some advice and a screen shot of what he needed to do to get past his firewall.
Justin said:
McAfee has obviously decided that HOL is a “risky” site all of a sudden. (We're not risky. Don't worry. We're hosted by one of the world's largest media companies - and no, it's not the same crew who run Hobbo Hotel - Hugh).
Here’s a screen shot from McAfee help, which tells you how to tell McAfee to allow access to HOL. Before following these instructions, anyone having these problems needs to attempt to access HOL via their browser so that it is the latest event in the list of blocked connections. (The Home Page these instructions refer to is the Home Page of the McAfee program, not the web home page.)

Dear Harringay Online
Thanks for bringing the issue of internet searches on library PCs to our attention. It does seem slightly odd to say the least. We've looked into it and can tell you that internet access in our libraries is provided and managed through an organisation called London Grid for Learning. Most of London’s thirty-three boroughs use London Grid for Learning to manage internet access in their libraries and schools, which is why this ‘glitch’ might be happening in libraries in other London boroughs.
There are London Grid for Learning default settings for words in their entirety, in part and as part of wider phrases that will be blocked when they are searched for. However, individual libraries and schools in Haringey can change their search settings to suit their needs.
We see no reason as to why the word “gay” used on its own or in part such as in “Harringay Online” should be blocked in any Haringey library and we will now be in contact with each library to assess their settings.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Pressdesk. That's helpful. An update would be appreciated once you've had a chance to follow things up a bit more.
I was booted out of an MSN site when I referred to my niggardly salary
And quite right too. You Scots were always a bit racist as Will of Stratford noticed:
Macduff to Ross: 'Be not a niggard of your speech. How goes't?'
Niggardly salaries are far too good for your lot. And why wasn't Macduff at home in Fife looking after the wife and bairns? Down over the border grabbing English jobs for Scottish lairds, you may be sure.
