Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Harringay house colour
What's with all the burgundy coloured houses is Harringay? There must be a reason...Are they council owned?

Personally find the burgundy colour completely disgusting. It would put me off buying a house that colour. Rank.

It's a shame the houses were painted at all, I think they look so much nicer in brick. It's actually bad for the brick to paint or render, it stops the bricks 'breathing'.
I know it comes down to personal taste but If I'd bought a house and it was one of the burgundy shades I'd definitely repaint it a different colour, immediately!

I would rather my house had not been painted but, as it has been, I think the best option is to stay with it.
It would be wise to remember that painting brick walls is much more difficult than typical interior painting and choosing to paint a new colour over an existing coat would be more difficult still.
As you imply, brick walls should not be sealed with water proof finishes, however good quality masonry paint is OK from this point of view as it is "breathable". Painting does have some advantages (aside from its appearance). The paint will need refreshing from time to time (and probably more often that the 15 years claimed for Dulux Weathershield) but it probably reduces the degree of weathering of the bricks, stonework and pointing. It also means that where you do some minor repairs to the bricks or pointing, you don't need to match up the existing surface so exactly.

I am so glad our house isn't painted as I find it hard enough to keep up with the maintenance of the sash windows and interior decorating. That said the house in front of us has just undergone a total refurb. They covered the bricks and painted the house in a sort of taupe grey colour and it looks fab.
