The newest one I've seen banded about is Harringey. Maybe that is a good compromise?
There are 162 recorded variations in history. Incredibly, a dedicated historian spent 35 years at the start of the last century researching the origins of the name.
Only thirty-five years? Then they barely scratched the surface of this absorbing topic.
"Pupils in local schools at the time were taught that the new borough's name should be pronounced with the ending sounded as in the endings of Finchley, Hackney or Hornsey"

Whaaaat?? Have I been pronouncing the name of my local authority wrong??
You say tomatoes........................they still taste the same.
