Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Haringey Council have recently launched a new website. I've had a very quick look and it does look clearer than it's predecesor, but I've not really had a chance to have a look around?

I've been picking up various gripes about its performance -"incredibly slow with many, many broken links", says one correspondent. I've tried it this morning and it is slow. It may just be having teething troubles.

Has anyone else used it?

Why don't you just ask Birdy to comment? He's never shy of giving his opinion with regard to design.
Be my guest.
Off the rack templated site, hardly inspirational but I suppose function over form in the era of economical cuts. A lot of text, a lot of menus but skimps on any visual impact.

Function should always take precedence over form

So many websites where you can't see the wood for the pretty trees.

Depends if the function is form.
que?!

It just looks like it's been re-skinned to me. And if you go down to a lower level content page the left hand menu is doing weird things so they need to do a bit more QA.

Personally I don't really like the design they've used, but then I didn't like the look and feel of the old site either.

On the plus side it wasn't slow for me.

Yes saw this today. Anything that gets rid of that awful yellow/orange colour scheme is an improvement. Definitely better. Looks a little amateurish with all the harsh lines/boxing but it'll do.

On the first day Haringey's new website was very slow. When I phoned, one of the staff said they knew about the problem and the IT people were trying to find why and to solve it. This morning (5 November) I had intermittent failures to connect at all to the Council's homepage.Though it now seems okay. (So please don't give up.)

The redesign tries to give prominence to the most frequently used functions. Though I still found the Home Page overcrowded and 'busy'.

Of course, my view as a frequent user is far less less important than casual visitors who have, perhaps only one or two reasons for going on the site. In the past I've suggested that our webteam learn from watching volunteers using the site. They told me they had done this.

If anyone sees another council website which does the job more efficiently and elegantly, please give the link.

(Tottenham Hale ward councillor.)

Maybe the people power project needs a few more volunteers as part of the council's 'green' initiative and cost cutting drive. If you've ever wondered why all those cycle shorts clad folk head down to the basement at 10 Alexandra House ...
In this time of cost cutting, perhaps the council should scrap the website altogether, create a Facebook page and put all the information on all services on a downloadable PDF. Another suggestion would be to put the site on Google or some freehosting service.
You lost me at "scrap it altogether" and got me back with the rest. On the other hand, they are creating jobs for presumably English resident web companies...
