Haringey gets tough on litterers: 120 fines issued

Pedestrians who dropped litter in Wood Green got more than they bargained for when they were caught in the act last week.
Enforcement officers caught 120 people littering the streets and issued each one with a fixed penalty notice of £75.
Cllr Nilgun Canver, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said:
"We really mean business. The council cannot continue to pay thousands of pounds of taxpayers' money to pick up after litter louts. People must take responsibility for disposing of their incidental rubbish.
"There are litter bins and recycling bins along the high street and there is no excuse not to use them.If people are caught littering or throwing cigarette butts onto the pavement, they can expect a hefty penalty."
As part of the council's zero tolerance policy on littering, a week long enforcement operation took place in Wood Green High Road aimed at targeting litter louts.
No person under the age of 18 or deemed vulnerable was issued with a fixed penalty.

"Operative" used to mean someone who operated a machine, usually in a factory - eg lathe, sewing machine, loom.

Re uninsured drivers. If you plan to go on driving in the UK and paying for your own insurance, don't drive uninsured. I hear on the grapevine that insurance companies will view seriously indeed any previous conviction for driving without insurance. If they're prepared to insure you at all, it will be at sky high premiums.

Went out to have a chat with my neighbour tonight as it was a nice evening and he was standing out there looking interested in something. Well he'd been watching the elderly and frail looking man across the road from us carrying bags of "rubbish" down to the passage (actually I checked, it was just at where the passage meets the road, the usual dumping ground). I mentioned that the council were cracking down on littering and so he said he'd have a word with him tomorrow (Greek Cypriot). The rubbish was all garden waste, nicely bagged up at great effort. He must have demolished an entire dead tree in his back yard.
If every member of the Labour Party in Harringay can door step each household for en election surely they can make sure they get to these people and explain what we do with our bloody garden waste!
My neighbour is going to speak to him tomorrow, scandalous that I have lived here for so long and not picked up any Greek.

He looks in better nick this morning, I think I'd be a bit frail if I spent my evening demolishing a dead tree down to a size where I could bag it and the dragged it 50m down the road bag by bag.
