Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Haringey Council's Tottenham regeneration team has no black or ethnic minority members

Seems rather strange. Even if it happened because no one on the Council thought about it that would show a colour BLINDNESS that one would have hoped that councillors were aware enough to avoid.

This is not accidental, nor is it an oversight.
Over the years, the austerity-light regime has come to the view that equality/diversity amongst those that work to deliver the programmes is not an essential requirement.
Just look at the all-white Senior Leadership Team shown in the chart:

http://www.haringey.gov.uk/appc-council_structure_chart1.pdf

And no amount of window-dressing will hide the disproportionate impact of the spending cuts, benefits onslaught and reduced earning on the population of Tottenham.
It's a case of keep the government and the developers sweet, as there is no appetite to protect those at the receiving end.

You may well be right. Any serving Labour councillors out there to respond?

According to the Councils website, the Cabinet Member for Communities and Deputy Leader of the Council, Councillor Bernice Vanier, has the responsibility for Equalities.

In earlier times, when this issue was treated as important, it was the Leader of the Council who carried this responsibility.

Thanks. I've emailed Bernice and will share what response I get.

Reminds me of the staffroom of the school I taught in on Haringey's borders circa mid-1970s. Why not blow up that chart x 50 and use it to picket every meeting of the SLT and Council for six months?

Well said Uncle :) [I meant Narendra, not OAP, that would be weird]

I agree 100000%.... Hope Nick Walkley is listening.

OMG, Sindhi Chandwani. No, I'm not your weird uncle. 1,000,000% never!

How can they reflect the needs of a community such as Tottenham, where I live, if the people in charge of the 'regeneration' do not represent those in the community? I may think I can effectively address the needs of residents from other ethnic backgrounds but it's unlikely I could do it as effectively as someone from those backgrounds...or maybe they don't want those backgrounds represented and this 'regeneration' really is a form of ethnic cleansing? I find this both disturbing and concerning either way.

What a load of preposterous, do-gooding, bull.

If there is bigotry, nepotism or plain racism in the council, say so and prove it. That article, like most journalism nowadays is making veiled accusations but no proposals. If there's such great men & women that represent the ward (what's that, they were in benefits, got an education, excelled at their job and now would provide inspirational leadership?) Name a few. Prove they have been wronged in favour of the old boys' club.

Positive discrimination IS discrimination.  Positive discrimination on the basis of race is racism.

I will always prefer the better prepared candidate for the job. I personally could not care less of his skin colour or whether he choses to wear a red hat to work. It's my council tax money we are talking about and I don't want it spent only to push political agendas other than the best bang for my buck.

Incidentally, we could ask the same question on disabilities. With so many people on DLA do we have a representative proportion on the haringey independent?

well said Ruben

If there were no women there, would you say the same?

If they all went to the same school, would you say the same?

If they were all about the same age, would you say the same?

It is more likely you will have nepotisim and people unfit for the job, and no organisation gets it 100% so we’re just looking at best outcomes, if your group lacks diversity. Investment banks in the city realise that diversity is very important so they promote it. They don’t send big straight jocks from UCLA to learn how to sell to (and therefore relate to) lesbian clients, they just make sure they have a diverse sales team. The outcome from this strategy is well understood, they make more money.

If you have a team providing services to a diverse group of people then you are being arrogant in the extreme if you think you can understand what they are thinking and how they may react to decisions you are taking. Of course the alternative is slightly worse: you just don’t care.

Now, if you want to genuinely engage in a heated debate about racism and the makeup of the council’s senior management group, I suggest you tone down your language or you will introduce unnecessary heat into an already hot topic.

Just the opposite. When I advertise for a position (IT) i seldom receive CVs from female applicants.

When I do, it is very rare that they have the same quality as their male counterparts. This is not because they lack quality, but because they are a rarity and they provide balance to the team. So they generally command a better salary. When your budget is fixed, the choice is between a more apt candidate or a less apt one on the same money, then you have to choose who will bring the better value.
