Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Today, as I was leaving Sainsburys, something caught my eye hovering above the roof of the building that houses Argos etc. It was a bird of prey. I couldn't quite make out what sort but it was hovering there and occasionally swooping down out of sight. I could only see it in silhouette but I did see it's wing feathers fluttering. But something wasn't quite right. Although it was hovering and swooping it stayed in the same place all the time.
Next stop was the traffic lights by Endymion Rd which, being red, geve me the chance to study the bird a little more closely.
It was a kite, and not of the feathered variety. On the roof over the sports shop you can see a pole, like a fishing pole, and looking closely you can just make out the tether that leads up to the 'bird'.
It certainly had me thinking for a couple of minutes. I wonder if it's working on the birds though?

There is something very similar at one of the local railway stations - Hornsey or Ally Pally. Had me fooled for a couple of minutes but then when you watched was the same as you describe. No idea whether it is effective!

I noticed this too! Thought someone was flying kites from the carpark as I was approaching, but it's fixed on to a roof. Wonder if it's to keep real birds away or just someone having a bit of fun?

Imagine my excitement when I thought I spied Harringay's very own (and surely first for a century) Red Kite! But then the wing angle was too sharp and the tail feathers excessively separated.. And there it was - the string.
Sigh.
It is a kite. But not that kind :-(
As to why it's there - who knows?
