Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Handrails on steps? Anyone know someone who does this?
Have been struggling to find tradesmen to come and give reasonable estimates for external handrails on steps...does anyone know of someone reliable who could get this done as soon as possible before winter sets in? Please let me know of any possible contacts, quite urgent

If you require this to stay safe in your home, social services will organise and install at no charge. Speak to your GP about it.

Thank you for the advice but I don't think I would qualify since I am able bodied and it is a shared house. We need someone who can install railings for the front steps as a safety precaution for all who use them.

If you want just rails made from tubes, I dont know, but if you want better-looking made to measure railings I can suggest the guy who built my side gates. Costs more but will be an asset to the value of the house. PM me for number.

Anyone know what the legal height is regarding railings on external steps? The building I live in (renting) has steeper than normal steps but the handrail is at about knee-height! Probably more dangerous to use it than not! We were lucky last winter as we didn't get snow/frost but I'm worried I'm going to die when we do get it.

Sorry just sent you a message instead of a reply so repeating myself here...scary without rails, we have 13 steps, and probably almost as bad to stoop down to grab a rail and lose balance. This is why I'm so keen to get them up as soon as possible! Legal wise, if you're in rented the landlord should be responsible for health and safety of his/her tenants? Check it out...

Yeah I'm taller than average and handrail at knee height is ridiculous! Problem with our building is freeholder owns the building and different landlords own each flat. I should probably speak to my landlord as a first port of call but I know that getting anything sorted in communal area previously has been a nightmare!

There's a place on the Hornsey Road that makes railings, maybe try there? Hornsey Metalwork, I think it is called.

Thank you. I'm older but not sure I'd qualify now since I'm reasonably able bodied but may not be in the future! It may be that Age UK Harringay might recognize the urgency of getting rails on before winter. Most firms I've contacted don't get back, delay or say they can't do it for weeks. Thanks for the number, will give them a ring.

Apologies, have only just seen this. I don't know if you've already found them, but these people were superb:
http://www.thehandrailpeople.co.uk/They fitted a suitably styled hand rail for mother's place in Crouch End at a very reasonable price just in time for winter a few years back. How busy they are now, I don't know, but they were able to come a lot faster than the others I tried.
