Hale, as in " Tottenham Hale "

According to Wikipedia:

Tottenham Hale takes its name from the old English word Hale (to hoist or pull), as goods (particularly timber) were unloaded from the River Lea for onward transport by road at this point.

Anyone can edit Wikipedia but this explanation sounds credible

I've read this before and wondered if the river was canalised then and if the 'road transport' referred to horse & carts...🤔
