"Goose-eating predator" lurking in the River Lea

The Guardian reports that Canada geese from around the Olympic Park are being grabbed by a mystery predator.

Mike Wells, a local resident, told the Hackney Citizen he had witnessed a 16lb Canada goose being grabbed and pulled under the water.

"It was about midday. We were sat on deck of my boat watching the goose. Suddenly the bird just went vertically down into the water. I was absolutely gobsmacked. Whatever took it didn't come back up again. There was no sign of it whatsoever, but it was obviously pretty big."

In 2005 boat trippers on the river Lea also reported a Canada goose vanishing "almost instantaneously" in the same way. At the time the incidents were linked to a giant turtle or alligator, but the mystery predator seemed to have disappeared before it was discovered.

Suggestions for what may be doing it also include terrapins, mink, pike, while zoology graduate Mike thinks it might be an escaped python.

'Sixteen pound Canada goose' this makes me suspicious. (Narrowed eyes) Has anyone here had any experience weighing Canada geese ?

One landed in our garden a few years ago and didn't have enough room to take off again - we managed to get it into a cardboard box and took it to the park to release it. Didn't weigh it, though.

Hmm...16lbs would feed a family of several this Xmas.

Dunno about the River Lea, but this Christmas there will definitely be a goose eating predator in my house.
