Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Good news for a New Year as South Harringay Junior School have a good Ofsted inspection

Just before the end of the Autumn Term, South Harringay Junior School were pleased to announce the result from their November Ofsted inspection.

South Harringay Junior School was found to be good with the behaviour and safety of the pupils found to be outstanding.

The key findings:

  • Pupils attitudes to learning were exemplary and that they were proud of their school. School was felt to be a safe place and they were able to take part fully in all lessons and activities.
  • Teaching was found to be good with outstanding practice in Year 6. High expectations and stimulating activities help all pupils learn well.
  • Support for pupils who need extra help was deemed very good, meaning that they catch up quickly with their peers.
  • The headteacher, leadership team and governing body were found to be strong and effective in their management of the school.
  • Robust monitoring means teaching is highly successful.
  • Pupils are encouraged to take responsibilities that help them grow as members of a community and understand the needs of others.
  • Parents and carers are very positive about the school.

The latest report (29-30 November 2012) does not yet appear to be published online at Ofsted but copies of the latest full report can be obtained from the school in the New Year (there may be a small charge for printing it). Parents at the school have all been given a copy.

On a personal note: As a parent of a 9 year old currently attending the school, it is very pleasing that the inspectors  have come to such positive conclusions about South Harringay Junior. The new Headteacher, Ian Scotchbrook, and his team have worked hard this year to achieve this result and the students have responded brilliantly to the challenges set before them. A good local school is a team effort and so I'm sure parents will join me in congratulating South Harringay Junior on a wonderful start to 2013.

This is a welcome and well-deserved tribute to the hard work of the Head, the staff and the governing body.

One thing which stands out (for me) is that no matter where you cast your eye when you are within the school, you are bound to learn something.

Once at a meeting I looked up and saw diagrams of solid geometrical shapes which had been strung across the ceiling. It was only then that I realised that the faces of a dodecahedron are pentagonal. Yes, even day-dreaming is put to productive use here.

Well done Ian and everybody else!

Prompted by the great news about North Haringay and Park View thought it worth resurrecting this post in case it slipped under the radar at new year. Don't want South Harringay to feel left out of the congratulations!
