Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I was chatting with a friend yesterday about what it's been like having a market in the hood. I quickly found myself realising that I'm just getting used to it really.

The first week I went, I was keen to show my support. So in between dodging the torrential showers, I chatted with lots of people and tried some of the lovely street food. I loved the Sri Lankan curry and have a soft spot for those Yummy Brazilians.....the food, I mean of course.

Last week, I tried some more street food, but also wanted to get the benefit of having a new source of fantastic fresh food on my doorstep once a week. Despite being something of a foodie, my work pattern for many years has meant that I'm too close to being someone with a lifelong habit of a weekly shop with top-ups. However, I'm gradually changing the way I food shop and I realise how lucky I am to have this great fresh food on my doorstep once a week.

So last week we came away with some wonderful fresh fish (caught and sold by the same guys), some fresh out of the ground veg and strawberries from the people who supply Wimbledon (big fat strawberries, ones you can still properly remove the hulls from.)

In the evening on the Sunday, there was an exchange on Twitter between a few Harringay Market goers. We swapped stories (and in once case pictures) of the great dishes we'd cooked (or had had cooked) with our market booty.

The skate wings (my first ever) we went home with became a superb rich and spicy Malaysian Skate Wing Curry. Nigel and Annie made a Pappardelle with Rabbit Ragu (pictured above).

So, I'm liking this new cornucopia of foodie goodness that's landed on my doorstep. I'm liking the habit of buying something wonderful and fresh each Sunday. Nigel and Annie have inspired me to try and Rabbit Ragu.....this week perhaps.

Or should it be something else this week? What should we shop for this week?

Tonight we had broad bean, pea and pancetta risotto made with cheese, pancetta, and veg brought from the market today. Amelia, my 3 year old, made me pick out the broad beans, peas, and pancetta before she would eat it.

(With a nod to Hugo I'll add that we washed it down with a South African Chenin Blanc from the Wood Green Sainsburys where its half price presently at £3.79, I'm a sucker for those half price wine deals, ok but let down by a faint petroly aftertaste)

Now to be a proper French housewife - obviously your secret ambition - you have to do this every day. 1/7 for a good start.

Zut alors! Tous les jours! Oh la la!

Don't think it's just the French that do that - most people here don't do a weekly shop - prefer to buy fresh vegetables - not in packets - as they need them. And we certainly don't have Frozen Food chains ..  and no ready-made meals. M & S tried, but soon found out that Germans won't buy ready-made stuff and they were gone within a year.

We also have twice weekly markets in most areas..

It's good to hear that the market is doing well - but it is wise to keep questioning the 'Greenness of it all'.

Same in Italy and Spain - and they're not embarrassed about giving the fruit and veg a good fondle before they part with their Euros. Having said that the Picard frozen food shops are really popular in France but the food tends to be fairly upmarket and people try to pass it off as something they have cooked themselves (yes, I saw the empty packets in the bin if you're reading this)

I already find myself adjusting my weekly shopping with the expectation of stopping by the market on Sunday. The first week I picked up fantastic crab and smoked salmon and last week the fresh scallops - it's fantastic to know the choice will be there each week. I also have to rave about the bakers' stall, particularly since the sourdoughs and ryes are hard to find elsewhere in our neighbourhood. Tonight I made a salad with the lettuce purchased last Sunday and found it still fresh and crisp - and the cherry tomatoes were to die for. So, while I cannot resist having a bratwurst in between, what I think is fantastic is the good quality food for the week. I have begun to spread the word to people I meet in the neigbourhood, since I am already spoiled and want to see the market become a permanent fixture. I'll be there rain or shine on Sunday, hoping the fish monger might have some prawns.....
