Fascinating stuff. Thank you for posting.
Labour. Its always Labour in this sheep pen borough.
Sheeple are fools no matter what their socio-economic class. Baaa!
Sheeple?
Thanks; a huge amount of work went into that map.
As a one-time Liberal Democrat Councillor, I note that Harringay Ward was not the only Ward in Haringey Borough where the Greens polled more than my former Party.
With so little national action by the Conservatives on climate and the environment, plus the cancellation by the incoming Labour Government of a raft of green measures—I expect that, other things equal the Greens' polling is likely to improve further.
If more ground is not to be lost to the Green Party, then in my view, the LibDems need to up their green-game*.
The LibDem Party used to have good green-credentials. However in my view, in the run-up to the EU-referendum it became a single-issue Party. That LibDems have national aspirations as shown by their current representation in Parliament. By the sheer chance afforded by the FPTP electoral system, their 72 MPs roughly represent their popular vote. (on the other hand, New Labour are grossly over-represented).
Locally, Labour's rhetoric on the environment is applifyed by the local authority's shameless PR Department. It is bad enough that Haringey Council's actions are so few, feeble and frustrating.
Climate and the environment is a national issue.
LibDems might be credited were they to reduce their local equivocation on matters environmental, such as the storage and facilitating of fossil-fuel burners and the burning of fossil-fuel in a city that already has what is probably the world's best public transport.
Labour Mayor of London Sadiq Khan deserves credit for the ULEZ extension, opposed by local- and London-Conservatives who have significantly less interest in air-quality and public health than do London Labour.
Haringey Council voted unanimously to declare a "climate emergency". In March, 5 (five) years ago.
Half a decade later, there's been frequent chat and PR, but far too little action. The lack of ability of our local authority to co-ordinate and deliver results was recognised with the "launch" of a climate action unit. The "CAU" is part of The Haringey Deal. That was almost a year ago. Did anyone notice?
* In this enviro-context, I should note that at a Hornsey & Friern Barnet General Election Hustings, I was much impressed by Haringey Fortis Green LD Councillor Dawn Barnes who spoke with knowledge and conviction. Dawn was unsuccessful on this occasion but, on the basis of her performance at the Climate Hustings, she would be an asset to Parliament.
Clive, can I please ask you to reread James Butler's article
https://www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v46/n14/james-butler/what-s-a-major...
I broadly agree with the points you make above. But I think they need to be seen in the context which Butler describes, Labour's "landslide" is an accurate term but inly because the ground has and continues to move.
