Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

There was a lively demonstration in support of the people of Gaza today with about 300 people marching from Ducketts Common to Haringey Civic Centre, with many joining as the demo passed through Wood Green shopping city.

A national "Demonstration for Gaza" is being called for Saturday 9th August, if anyone has the details please post.

these children are learning a valuable lesson. That civilised people have a duty to tell the truth when barbarism is carried out. Let hope we can get Haringey Council to dump Veolia who profit from the illegal occupation and expropriation of Palestine.

Veolias involvement in Israel is not silly.

"-Veolia is part of a consortium which operates the Jerusalem Light Railway connecting illegal Israeli settlements to west Jerusalem. Veolia also runs bus routes which connect illegal Israeli settlements to Israel and west Jerusalem.
-Palestinians are not allowed to use Veolia-operated buses, which connect the illegal Israeli settlements, over substantial lengths of their routes.
-Veolia’s record on non-discrimination is poor; in 2010 it placed job adverts for the Jerusalem Light Railway which were racist, deliberately worded to discourage Palestinian citizens of Israel from applying for or being eligible for jobs
-Veolia is involved in taking waste from Israel and illegal Settlements and dumping this on stolen Palestinian land.
The Palestinian Boycott Divestment and Sanctions National Committee has asked people of conscience across the world to boycott Veolia, a call which we endorse."

"Let's hope there's no need for the August 9th march." I agree.

Great photos Maggie, thanks for that. A really good demo which showed that local people care and are prepared to take peaceful action.

Where was the 'We're really upset' and 'Down with this sort of thing' placards ?

Great to see local people in solidarity with some of the most oppressed people of the world.

Solidarity ? They're going home to their nice houses with their nice food and their nice TVs

They might even go out to a nice restaurant or a nice pub. Later they'll go to their nice beds and have a nice sleep. What kind of solidarity is that ?

Everyone hopefully will sleep safe here in London, you are right. Thankfully not everyone, will clearly support a regime which has terrorised a whole nation of people for decades and killed people in hugely disproportionate numbers as a clear strategy of collective punishment.

not one sign mentioning Hamas, such ignorance. Disgusting.

You quote very selectively from your own source. "In 2010 Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal stated that the Charter is "a piece of history and no longer relevant, but cannot be changed for internal reasons"."

oh yes of course!

This is from an interview with Henry Siegman the former head of the American Jewish Congress and the Synagogue Council of America.

Commenting on the Hamas charter that calls for Israel's destruction, Siegman says: "The difference between Hamas and Israel is that Israel is actually implementing [a destruction policy] — actually preventing a Palestinian state which doesn't exist. Millions of Palestinians live in this subservient position without rights, without security, without hope, and without a future."

Commenting on Israeli justifications for killing Palestinians in the name of self-defense from 1948 through today, Siegman responds: "If you don't want to kill Palestinians, if that's what pains you so much, you don't have to kill them. You can give them their rights, and you can end the occupation. And to put the blame for the occupation and for the killing of innocents that we are seeing in Gaza now on the Palestinians — why? Because they want a state of their own? They want what Jews wanted and achieved? This is a great moral insult."

No I wouldn't, however Israel has become the evil it once detested so much and two wrongs do not make a right.
