Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hello Harringay,

Apologies if this topic has appeared before, but I was just wondering if anyone else would like a small entrance to Finsbury Park at the end of Wightman road? I think it would be great to have a small gate there and would and stop people having to walk further down the busy road before reaching the peaceful oasis of the park. ( I know it's not really that far!)

The roundabout is probably why a gate isn't allowed, but I notice that someone keeps ripping a hole in the fence at that point anyway, so a gate would prevent the council from having to continually fix the hole. I would climb through the hole myself but I usually have a little one in tow so this isn't always possible.

Any info welcomed!

I think the problem might be that people would start trying to cross at the roundabout, a nightmare in itself, and a path should need to be laid throughout the American Gardens on the other side of the fence. Being at the end of the slope down from the running track it gets particularly waterlogged.
I cut off via Lothair Road and then down to the crossing by the New River. Nice to get away from the traffic noise on Wightman, though I don't know if that's convenient for you and your little one.

Yes I do that too Michael. More than possible with little ones. When coming down the passage you have to do a bit of Wightman Rd via Umfreville/Atterbury but then nip back in at Lothair Rd South and back out at Conningsby onto the crossing.

Thanks thse are good tips, will try this next time!

Hi _ I lived on the Ladder in the 50s and I am sure there was a gate opposite Alfroy Road just where the finger board is now.

I was thinking about this while out running yesterday and there is a similar situation at Pymmes Park except that they have managed to get around the issue of having an entrance next to a mini roundabout by splitting the pedestrian access points with a small fence and adding small triangular traffic islands to split the traffic just before the roundabout so that road users and walkers do not directly cross the roundabout itself.

here is a google street view of it - https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=pymmes+park&ll=51.617862,-0.06...

Wow that looks great! How to get something similar in our neighbourhood I have absolutely no idea!
