Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi,

We really like the area and have looked at a few houses for sale either side of green Lanes. I was wondering what everyone thought the differences and relative merits of either side?

So far we've been looking at places nearer the Overground station nearer the school (we have a little one)

Nick (and Lizzy)

P.S. I was really impressed by this website - the level of community activity is one of the reasons we like the area!

I would also say that depending on the road/house you're comparing it to on the ladder, the Gardens housing type is slightly different.  Almost the entire estate went up in (I think) about five to ten years, and that has consequences for the amount of brick/plaster/timber maintenance the house needs. If it's been looked after well in recent years, you'll probably be alright. Our Gardens house was last renovated in the 50s-60s, was a bit of a wreck and has needed more of an overhaul than it even initially appeared to need.

The general vibe re: the evident population is mixed, between pensioners and older families who've been here for aeons, newer families, the odd student house and quite a few houses let to groups of young working people.  Quite a few of the houses in our road are Council-owned (I think this is because they transferred to that directly from still being owned by the society who built the estate), and there's a bit of dissatisfaction with how little the council have got around to in maintaining them.

It's nice having St Ann's hospital open ground bordering the area, & Chestnuts nearby.  Our local walking 'zone' is between the Gardens, the Harringay stations and Finsbury Park.

It may just come down to which house you prefer, really.

Thanks, all this info has been very useful. Looks like we are going for somewhere in the Gardens...
