Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Had some daffodils going spare so here's my naive attempt at some guerrilla gardening in the hole where a tree used to be on Frobisher Rd. First pic freshly planted in the dead of night, second pic 12 hours later:

Probably council's parks dept. Funding is a little tight.

Oh what a shame.

When we first started planting out in the Warham planters, we lost quite a few plants, one man caught twice by my neighbour digging out plants and I caught an old lady hauling wallflowers out of the soil and putting them into her shopping trolley plus people picked the daffodils, stripping one of the planters. In another planter, a beautiful clump of marigolds was there one day and gone the next. I was told by (now defunct) neighbourhood management that people steal from the baskets on Green Lanes too.

I'd say don't be discouraged but maybe adopt a planter if your street or a neighbouring one has one and go for less stealable things. Nasturtiums are great, for example. I also put a little sign up on our street garden explaining that they were looked after by the local people. It's my impression we got less theft after that but maybe we also got cannier about what to plant.

Did you see this video by the pothole gardener? Note the bus driver who went and helped himself to one of the plants.

Btw we have a seed swap in the Salisbury on Thursday from 8. Happy to share more guerilla gardening highs and lows.

Hadn't seen that video Liz, its great. I'm not discouraged, I have pot plants in the front garden and lose about 30% of those each year so I knew what to expect. There are some planters on Frobisher Rd by the passage entrance which look like they could use some tlc, but they're a bit big for me, I might help with them if there was anyone else interested, but also they're a bit official looking and less fun, i have my eye on some other smaller spots. I sowed some Nasturtium seeds the other day so thats good news about them, what else can you recommend?

Hi Ant
Would be happy to talk to you about the planters - a group of us had a go at the ones Mattinson last year and I'm up for trying to do more with other ones. I'm also going to the seed swap, can we tempt you..!?

I'm experimenting with different herbs at the moment. I follow the progress of these chaps at the moment and they put mint into tree pits. I also think poppies might work. My neighbour who helps me with the planters is a great fan of mallow for neglected places too.  Come along on Thursday and we could do some planning!

Oh no! That is sad. I'm glad you did it anyway. Can we plant something impossible to steal there? Maybe a new tree?

This is the spot today. Coincidence?

What a shame you didn't get a new tree!

How's that for an 'ungreening' of the streets...
