Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I've just seen Liz's comment here.

So, Liz and Hugh, I'll promise the site a £25 p.a. subscription and I invite everyone who can afford it to make a similar promise. A fiver, tenner or £50 or more - as people can manage.

We can't have HoL disappearing!

Like I said, I don't hold the figures but I don't think that we pay the last fee which is why Hugh is always asking people to compress photos and not upload lots of them or video or music etc. Even if we were to reduce costs in this way, we still have some site fees and we would still need to find funding for them.

The update becomes increasingly difficult to send out as we get more members. If we were to revert to a link free smaller update, we could hold down costs. I guess some might be happy with that, others have expressed the belief that the update as it is, is valuable for them.

On a purely personal note, I did find the google ads obtrusive and having been on another ning network recently where they exist, it makes the site seem a bit shoddy (and they are often in direct opposition to what people complain about, the Shelton springs to mind).

If we are to pay for the site through advertising, then I would prefer that we support local businesses and give them the side bar for adverts.

I personally don't find the idea of 50p a week too daunting a prospect to maintain an ad free, banner free site but that is just my view.

I should add that I don't believe that we have plans to make people pay to use the site if that is concerning anyone but would instead be relying on good will donations that people can afford.
Thanks for this Alistair.

We've previously had the debate about whether we should remove ads and the consensus was to remove them and look at getting money from local advertising. So that debate's been had and we'll trial the local advertising before going back on the decision.

Removing promo links is about eight bucks a month - HoL was one of the earliest sites to use Ning and we are still charged at the old rate. Same goes as for above.

As for transparency, Matt, of course. (Is this lest I run off to Spain?) Last year's accounts have already been sent to the HoL Sustainability group. All are welcome to attend. In summary we spent about £500 last year of which I funded about half.
I really don’t think HOL could be any more “transparent” unless it was a piece of cling film.

All the details are available for HOL SG of which anyone can become a member and attend meetings. All minutes and other important financial information will be available online soon.

The HOL SG bank account will be live in a matter of days so that all donations can go via that. The amended constitution will be on the website at the weekend so people can view that too.

This is all quite new to a lot of people and takes time to get organised, that’s why HOL SG was set up last summer.

Can we hold off on donations until the HOL SG Paypal account is live, it just keeps affairs clean and in one piece for clarity.

Apart from financial support, HOL needs support and trust from it’s members.

Update: Last I heard Hugh was approaching the Bordeux with the case of readies [joke!]
Well as long as he brings back some cases of red-ies I don't mind ;-)
By transparency I meant for 09/10. Wouldn't matter if Hugh was based in an Indian tea plantation, all one needs is an internet connection.

Look forward to John's costing proposals and as you say Birdy then we can have more accurate funding discussions (ie. what costs exactly need to be met).

I do remember the no ads discussion. Was Baldwins ever approached as a test case for a promo on HOL?

Event idea: HOL/Salisbury live music tent during Harringay Festival this Sept located outside the pub. Donations could be taken then too.
The funding discussions will take place at the HoL SG group Matt, not on the site. You're most welcome to come, as is any member.
Nothing wrong with one-off donations; or impromptu collections. But I assume the key aims are:
§ Independence
§ Reliable and continuing core funding - with a cash cushion in the bank in case charges are suddenly hiked.

Seems to me that the best way to achieve both is the public subscription/membership model.

P.S. I posted this comment before reading Hugh's reply above. Sorry if I'm out of line here.
I think what Hugh means, Alan, is that general opinions/ideas on how to raise funds are welcome to be discussed on the site. In fact a post HOL Sustain meeting thread was opened here to allow people to see what had been discussed and to give people a chance to comment on the ideas raised in the meeting (or as you have done Alan, add your own).

What is not going to happen is that the finer points of costing will be debated ad nauseum on the site. This was why the HOL Sustainability group was formed, to take on such 'housekeeping' and, as Hugh says anyone may come to that who wishes to be involved. Unlike many local groups, our minutes and constitution are published online and there is even opportunity to comment. As it goes, I think we are very transparent.

Incidentally my original reference to transparency was intended to refer to the remote possibility that out in the world, there might be a pot of money with our name on it but which we wouldn't be able to claim without certain requirements such as a HOL bank account. That pot has yet to materialise and if anyone knows which rainbow it is sitting at the end of, they are also most welcome to post a link to it.
There's this guy in Nigeria keeps emailing me - says he's got a load of money to give away. I'll forward you his email if you like
Nah, that's just me trying another line in case the Harringay Online route doesn't work!!
