Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Morning

This morning there was another dead fox within a very short distance to Ducketts Common (end of Falkland Rd).  I regularly walk my dogs there and see a lot of others doing the same.  I'm worried that someone is putting down poison so thought I would alert fellow dog owners. It is a constant struggle trying to stop the dogs eating in the park and this adds another level of concern!

(Obviously I have no proof that the foxes were poisoned or that it was in Ducketts)

That is a worry. It is illegal to poison foxes. This puts wildlife and pets at risk.

If you suspect that a fox has been poisoned, you should contact the Wildlife Incident Investigation Scheme hotline 0800 321 600.

Thanks - someone I work with has suggested the council will test the foxes for poison?  Do you know if that is the case or how I would find out?

Testing the fox for poison is best thing, but I don't know if the council does that. I suggest you phone the Wildlife tel no I gave you - that is from the Health & Safety Executive - as I'm sure they'll give advice on what's best to do. You can also tell them there have been other potential incidents in the same area.

If someone is poisoning foxes, as well as being an act of cruelty, it's a waste of time. Remove one fox and another will take over the territory within weeks. Fox populations are self regulating. They cannot over-populate, but will always breed back to replace numbers lost since the previous breeding season. The Fox Project charity says that far from any increase in fox numbers, recent scientific surveys indicate stable populations in all areas apart from London and the south east, where numbers are estimated to be around 10% lower than they were in 1998.

Oh I agree, a cruel and useless undertaking.  There was already a member of the street cleaning team 'seeing' to the fox this morning so the council are definitely aware,  the fox on the common was also taken away fairly promptly.

I'll call the number and see if there's anything that can be done.

For cat owners out there, it's always a good idea to keep your cat inside at night -  as this reduces the risk of them getting lost, injured by a car or injured by a cat fight.
