Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

There’s currently an insane amount of flyposting between Wood Green and Turnpike Lane. 99% seems to be by the SWP, and is all over bus stops, street furniture and pretty much any vertical surface. They are almost impossible to remove, which means that TfL and the council have to waste time and money getting them professionally removed. If any councillors are reading this, please advise on what you’re doing to remedy this.

Purely as a matter of interest, what exactly do you expect them to do 'to remedy this'?

Enforce the law. Prosecute anyone flyposting. That's what I expect them to do.

Of course they should exercise some judgement and not, for example, pursue someone for posting a sign about their missing cat (or child). However, persistent flyposting in large volumes should be tackled robustly. A polite letter from the council to the SWP asking their members to cease and remove existing stickers and posters would be a start.

Why should the council (we) have to pay to clean it up? It forces the council to make a choice between doing nothing and letting the street scene/local environment deteriorate further or spending money to remove the flyposting which could otherwise be spent on more important things like local schools, youth clubs, aged care, potholes, cycling infrastructure, trees, parks etc etc etc.

the problem is to prosecute successfully you need to actually catch someone in the process of pasting something up, its no good simply going after the organisation that appears on the flyer, they can simply say it was never intended to be stuck on a wall but many were given away.

Hi Brian, David; The Council has very little money to prosecute in cases like these. I’ve been told by a Councillor about a situation where someone’s front garden was a mess. The last straw is prosecution they said and there’s no money. Same goes for people whom fly tip and restaurants that let people smoke inside it seems. It’s a shame because things are just going to deteriorate further. As per Richard’s remark, I’ve removed thousands of cable ties off posts. Thousands. If you want anything done, do it yourself. I agree that we need to do what we can - but when dealing with a group/cult like the SWP, it’s probably good to know that the council is aware that they’re being naughty.

i too have removed hundreds of those laminated flyers from lampposts - it’s very satisfying and dead easy!

I saw a very interesting interview with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Laura Kunsberg.

His overriding philosophy was stop whining and don't wait or expect someone else to do something.  If you organise a few people with paint scrapers or other tools you could easily deface them.

Hello all

Good news - I raised the issue via the ‘clean streets’ app, and followed it up with a phone call. All of the fly posting was removed within 24 hours! Haringey get a lot of criticism, so it’s good to report when they do the right thing.

i also contacted the venue (the lovely church on West Green Road) where the promoted events were due to take place. I suggested that they might want to think twice about hiring their hall to this group. Seems to have done the trick.

Even the august Crouch End Festival isn't above flyposting for their events and just walking away. Held more than a month ago now and posters still extant in Stroud Green and Harringay. Don't they have a list of sites on a spreadsheet??

Related issue - flyers various, staple-gunned to tree trunks...

David - thank you and well done.

The worst culprit is (bizarrely) the car boot events in Palmers Green. Probably 30 posters in a short stretch of the high road.
