Flame was closed last night? It's rarely busy. Such a shame because their food is different and good. Something - can't put my finger on it - is wrong there. It doesn't seem to attract people.
I notice the newcomer Hanci is almost always empty when I walk past. They won't survive for long at that rate.

Antepliler is pretty laid-back in my experience. Might be one to try if you already hasn't? It's bigger, but a bit less bustling than some of its neighbours. I noticed today that it has had a big refurb though, and don't know how much it will have changed: hopefully they won't have put their prices up too much as it was always great value! I went to their sister restaurant in Islington and boy what a difference on the bill ;)

A restaurant owner has been fined more than £11,000 for failing to properly licence the rented flats above his shop.
Hayrettin Kacmaz, of the Yayla Restaurant, in Green Lanes, Harringay, appeared at Tottenham Magistrates Court earlier this month.
He pleaded guilty to failing to get a house in multiple occupation (HMO) licence for two properties above his business.
Mr Kacmaz also pleaded guilty to failing to properly manage the premises after Haringey Borough Council officers found the flats had a leaking roof, missing handrails and broken windows.
The shop owner also failed to provide the council with copies of gas and electrical safety reports, and could not to provide details of persons with an interest in the properties.
Magistrates fined him £11,620 and ordered him to pay full costs of £1680 to the council.
Councillor Joseph Ejiofor, the cabinet member for planning and enforcement, said landlords must provide properties which are safe to live in and suitable to let.
He said: "The law and the local HMO licensing scheme are crystal clear and it is a false economy when landlords like Mr Kacmaz fail to properly licence and maintain their properties.
“Even though he had the good sense to plead guilty Mr Kacmaz is facing a hefty fine – which could quite easily have been avoided.
“This is why our council is extending the HMO licensing scheme to Tottenham, and this case reinforces our message to HMO landlords that if they don't get the required licenses and they don’t properly maintain their properties for tenants, they will be prosecuted.”

Therese, this may have been a misunderstanding. It may be that prior to their enlargement, Antepliler, just wouldn't take any bookings beyond a certain size in the evening. I know this is the case for Hala at the moment. They feel that with a single shop floor space, bookings for larger parties aren't viable (though I have to confess I'm struggling to try and remember the logic as Eren explained it to me).
Dubmill, if you like single premises places, try Hala. They've been hit by some of the new openings.
Thanks for the tip. Has anyone tried any of the restaurants on the stretch of Green Lanes just north of Newington Green? We went to Sariyer Balik once and it was good, but it's a bit on the expensive side. I note there are a few others and they seem more like the basic kind of restaurants that I prefer. Also, what about that Nawroz Middle East Cuisine place up towards Turnpike Lane?
With the property value increases outstripping rental income over the past 12 months around here, there's hardly any incentive to rent out your property...
I have it on good authority that it's changed hands, but it will be reopening as a restaurant.
I too am distressed that Flame seems to have closed down. I found the food and service there consistently good. It seemed a mistake when they relocated the cooking and take away counter since it was this that made the, otherwise rather dull space, interesting. I have tried most of the larger restaurants (Selale, Gokyuzu, Devran, Zer) and found them all less appealing than Flame used to be. Gok had best service but seems always too crowded (which can be a good sign but also may be a sign of having acquired an extravagant blessing from Trip Adviser). Most recently, I tried Zer at lunch time and found it a bit unconvincing. Unlike some other restaurants, they do a version of Flame's trade mark dish, ali nazik, but it was disappointing. I did not like Selale's new interior decor - especially the blue lighting which may now be appearing elsewhere - let's discourage this trend if we can.
I can confirm what others have said about Hala, it is a charming and well run little place right next to Lemon. I am told that "Hala" means aunty in Turkish (actually only father's sister is hala, mum's sister has different term). I asked the elderly lady who is often sitting within whether she is Hala and she agreed that she is.
Very sad - We used to go to Flame/Bingol when we used to live in the north of the Ladder. It was one of our few favourite Turkish restaurants. My husband and daughter still went there for dates when I was not around at night even now that we had moved to the south of the Ladder. We found they served good fish dishes and not too noisy compared to those mega Turkish restaurants. People there were pleasant.
I stopped by the premises of Flame earlier today and spoke to the new boss whose team was busy making some internal rearrangements. He said that they would open tomorrow around 12.30. He claimed to have a new chef, fresh from a 5 star hotel in Turkey and that they would be offering buffet style service. I enquired about breakfast and coffee and he said that his intention was to offer that too in due course. He said he was considering merging the premises with the those of Obergine. I encouraged him to include bacon on his breakfast menu. The new man claims to have restaurants in Ponders End and also in Soho. His wife is Italian and some of his restaurants offer Italian cuisine.
It seems that grass will not grow for long where Flame used to be.
