Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

All this talk about fish ...

Is there a good fishmonger locally? I've not seen one except in Stroud Green and one in Stoke Newington - neither of which seem to sell much fish I would want to eat.

The best I know, that sets the bar very high, is Steve Hat on Essex Road, N1. The fish are so fresh, putting every farmer's market stall I've seen and most fishmongers in London to shame. And he sells ENGLISH and SCOTTISH caught fish mainly. Special highlights being wild salmon and sea-trout in the season from scotland. A lot of his fish comes from Brixham I believe. His sea bass are stiff and slimey! Phenominal.

The quality I've seen on offfer at local farmers' markets is not encouraging. With all our turkish neighbours you would have thought that there would be a demand for good fish on Green Lanes.

A little closer to home is a fine fishmongers in Broadway Market. The guys there used to work for at Steve Hat's infact. So quality is something they understand and provide.

There's a good one in Crouch End, near Budgens and a very good one in Muswell Hill - near the chippy funny enough. They do some lovely stuff.

There is a very good fishmonger in the indoor market in The Mall, Wood Green. Also two great butchers, a fab green grocers and an excellent oriental mini-mart.

Maximus at the Harringay Market. They catch the fish and sell it.

Surprised - from other comments, people have been raving about it. Here are some of the photos posted from Sunday:

We bought some really nice fish from then on Sunday - it is really exciting to think we can get fresh fish like this every week.

thanks for setting this up.

David

Neil, if you need proof that Maximus are the real deal, I think this or this should help. They catch the stuff themselves, can't get better than that!

Got 4 very handsome Dover Sole for £10 from Maximus - the 2 we bought the day before cost us over £13! Planning on getting some hake this weekend.

Also well worth a try, esp for seafood is South and North.

Try Walter Purkis on Crouch End Broadway (also in Muswell Hill) - they have their own smokery in MH, and their smoked haddock & hot smoked salmon are both fab.

There's also a new-ish fishmonger on Highbury Barn, but haven't tried it.

There's a fishmongers at the Seven Sisters end of West Green Road. The Chinese supermarket also sells fish- some of it live. Can't comment on the quality, but it all looks very fresh.

Hi Neil - please give the fish at Harringay Market another look. We bought some Hake there last Sunday; was very good. We are a mostly pescatarian/veggie household and are so happy to be able to get fish this local to us. Prior to this, we always bought our fish inThe Mall, Wood Green, or Walter Purkiss.

The fishmonger at the Seven Sisters end of West Green Road is a bit whiffy, IMO, and I've honestly never been tempted to go in. It has lots of frozen tropical fish, but doesn't seem so hot on fresh fish from UK waters. However, the one at the Church Street end of Stoke Newington High Street (on the left hand side as you go north) is fine: clean, decent stock fairly priced. Not as wondrous as Steve Hatt's, but few places are. They're pretty good on sustainability info, and also sell good chorizo.

For anybody who shops further up the Tottenham High Road, there's also a very decent fish stall in the group of stalls on the right hand side of the High Road round about Bruce Grove - I got some great herrings there recently.
