No idea about Finsbury Park
But you could go to the River Lea, (short walk from Tottenham Hale). You may need a licence - no idea about the law but I have seen people fishing there, just above the locks if you walk north from Tottenham Hale
People also fish in Alexandra Park boating lake but you may need to join the angling club there.
You can fish in some - but not all - of the ponds on Hampstead Heath. Again, you probably need a permit from the park authorities.
These guys would know
I think fishing is still free in Finsbury Park @ the Eastern end of the lake where "swim" platforms have been installed. Adults would still need an environment agency fishing licence but I think under 12s are exempt. I don't believe the fishing is very good though and that's probably why you don't often see anyone there. The best free fishing (fairly) locally is the Highgate Ponds on Hampstead Heath; there is also the "Viaduct Pond" and the Vale of Health but these are of course that little bit further. You need to get Hampstead Heath permit first though and these always used to be free from the Parliament Hill Staff Yard. The following links give details:

I find compost worms are an excellent bait and free if you have a compost heap. A good ground bait can be made from cheap bread crumbs sold at Chinese supermarkets e.g. Hoo Hing.
What about the East & West Res near the climbing centre on the other side of Manor House?
I think you can but i'm not sure. Hope this helps.
Hi
I've taken my children fishing at Alley Pally, Trent Park and also Hampstead Heath. Under 11's don't need a rod license and you just pay the warden on most sites, if they ever turn up. Our best results have been with Spam and corn out of a tin and white bread. While trying to catch fish the kids fill themselves up on Spam sandwiches!!
