Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Video here.

A little 2 1/2 minute wobbly video as a flavour of the fireworks, from the terrace - I was quite astonished to find myself just feet away from Her Worship the Mayor.

Beyond the exposure range of my Ixus, and the lasers come off badly in the brightness contest with the fireworks.  Ho hum.

Well done Pam. Music certainly better this year too! The wind was playing havoc with those fireworks; blink and they were blown away! Did you feel that the event was well organised, crowd control and the like? Did it take long to get into and out of the site? Just thinking possibly for next year.

The VIP concept was a rip off. £20 got you in a room with no atomosphere, a bar with no German beer and a buffet of cheap sandwiches and a free glass of wine when you arrive, ( before a beer festival ??? ).

Otherwise a fairly well organised event that used the inside of the palace with traditional German bands to good effect but I really did prefer it when there wasn't fences everywhere squeezing people together.

I do think it has massive potential to grow and grow though and in time and could see it becoming increasingly difficult to secure tickets as it becomes even more popular ( mixing live bands, beer and fireworks together is a nice combo ) and we could see the price getting prohibitive for families.

Also, I really think the VIP concept should be dropped. It means some friends can't get in bits other people can and In that respect it's quite divisive. One ticket, access all area's would be best , but doubt it will happen because there will always be pressure for the council to ensure the basic ticket is as cheap as possible so they get less flack.

We went at about 6pm, walked up from WG tube. The crowds were OK at that time and later. I never felt trapped and I don't like crowds, I like to always be able to see the exit. No a lot of heavy security though maybe that was just us. It would have been tricky to manage with eg a wheelchair I think - unless it was possible to drive through and blue-badge park, the only info about that online was that there were a few places, first come first served - this is no use at all to anyone who needs accessible parking and a safe space. Lost points there.

We got very confused about the bar area. We could just see into this big room with people sitting at plastic tables with the odd wine glass. We were looking for a place to buy a drink but there wasn't anywhere easy so we gave up. Turned out later that this was the £20 ticket area - if I'd paid £20 for that I'd have been very pissed off, I'd thought it would have been a rooftop or something with decent food on offer.

The stewards didn't know most of what was where.  Not their fault.

The fireworks were OK but I have seen better. They didn't seen that choreographed, maybe it was the wind that blew the trails apart. I liked the lasers, something new to me. From where we were, on the terrace, I could hardly hear the music.

It was overall OK, a good £6 worth all in, this is more that I'd put in the buckets in the past but I don't mind paying for something rather than nothing. It has potential. We spoke to a guy who was more than a steward, from the organisers, they had taken a gamble on it so were very pleased it had sold out. They know they can  do it better.

I'd like to see more food and drink stalls or vans around the place, not just clustered by the fairground. They hadn't got many to buy in because those people are apparently having a hard time at the mo and few would risk an unknown event. Now we can expect to see the likes of Tom Archer's Gourmet Sossiges.

Parmish, it sounds like you may have missed the large Bavarian beer hall with long tables that anyone could access, that's was quite good in a umpapa kind of knee slapping way.

Would be interesting what they do next year, will the Germanic twist continue or will we rotate through other national music possibilities ?

Either way, I think it's going to be a very large cash cow to some private company basically off the back of what was a local spirited tradition but at least the council tax isn't going to shoot up and the tradition is kept alive.

I agree, the fireworks were slightly underwhelming and the watching at the terrace bit is not as good because you're further away from the fireworks, so VIP concept was double rubbish.

We bypassed the oompah lot as we thought there was another ordinary bar at the other end of the Pally. There may have been but we gave up after failing to solve the riddle of the £20-zone.  We asked stewards and were told there was another bar but with a 2-hour queue. Anybody?

I don't know how possible it is landscape-wise, but I'd like to see a smaller paid fenced-off bit in the middle of the park, with some free access outside that, with a less good view - like the cheap seats behind the pillars in a theatre. Some food etc vans there too. That way it's still a park for those who want a park, and helps spread out the crowd.

I can see the 'entertainments' getting to be a bigger part. Also more indoor stuff. This year it did not rain...
