Finsbury Park - Dog Walking Spaces
Are there are spaces in Finsbury Park left where you can walk your dog? On today's walk with my puppy (who I got for my mental health and wellbeing) I was again shouted at by a group of men exercising as she ran up to them to say hello.
I have signed her up for puppy training classes in Hampstead Heath and have been training her since I had her but as a 6 month old puppy she sees adults exercising as playing and gets excited. Dog training is a process but there doesn't seem to be anywhere in the park left to do this.
I usually walk the full perimeter of the park or half way round behind the pond so completely avoiding the children's playing area but every space has a gym or sports court or a playing field. Even the tree area by Manor House has groups of adults taking yoga or aerobics classes.
If I was to go to a more dog friendly park I would have to take public transport and don't have much time as I work full time. :(

Dogs have always been a issue at Finsbury Park
Especially when owners could drive in and let dogs run around out of Control
Understood puppies should be on a lead for the first Six months, until it gets used of its master
When a Park Keeper 40 years ago, we was flooded with issues. But nothing was done apart from a few Notices
And since then local population has grown as the number of Dogs
One of the issues was small dogs getting through lake fence and chasing bird life
As mentioned many people go to the park for exercise and do not want to be chased or snapped at by any dog
Plus keep walking or running into Dog poo
Believe into days world, No dog should not be on a lead in a public place where there other users, especially youngsters. Seen to many youngster mauled by dogs who believe they want o play with dog. Often needing medical care afterwards
Also issues with dogs not getting on with other Dogs /breeds
Joys of a ever growing population and limited green spaces

Hi Bob My puppy is now over 6 months and does usually respond well to recall but the area which was previously ok for me to let her off for a run and to practice recall now has an open gym in it. There used to be a fence around the gym equipment near Endymion road. My main point is that there could be a space for dogs in the park where I could let her off lead. The rest of the time I walk her on lead (and always pick up her poo). I also avoid the children’s area completely. My recommendation would be to increase the size of the puppy training area (and stop gym classes in there) and to put a fence and gate around the gym equipment. Sadly, the park itself is just not dog friendly any more.

Council did not ban them. But keepers dealt with issues daily
From complaints after big storm that park trees had killed pitballs, where owners had got the to hold on to young trees, that had launched dog , which was injured or killed their Dog/s
Dogs had chased squirrels through lake fence and damaged face or more
Other dogs was mating with theirs
Dogs harassing children around the park. Some used to set dogs on others
We used to take out of Control dogs down to Tottenham Police Station, as had Kennel. When Dogs was unclaimed or out of Control
Thankfully in those days We had a Dog Section, which helped to keep the park safe most Days
Best memories was Drunks and rough sleeper,that used to have nightmares after Arsenal football Home matches. As London Transport Police Dog Section used to Train in park after park was closed with their Dogs
As in those days the Park was closed half a hour after sunset , All gates was locked
Great days before Events took over Park. And Council done away with Park Keepers

Hi Thea,
I would suggest that Ally Pally is a much nicer place to walk a dog. I use the lower slopes to do training with our dog. There’s less food/litter around too (my dog is a rescue and is food obsessed). I also go to Lordship Red quite a lot but again there’s lot of chicken bones around but no where as bad as Finsbury Park.
pre COVID I used to also get the overground to Gospel Oak and walk her on the Heath. Sadly Finsbury Park is just really scabby these days and I wouldn’t let my dog off the lead anywhere in there now due to the litter problem.

Always found Finsbury Park a much less friendly place for dogs and dog walkers. Alexandra Palace on the other hand is amazing. Real sense of doggy community there.
There was even a dog birthday party in the week where all the regular dogs were invited and party bags given out.
