Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Walking to the tube today - I saw someone "apprehended" by someone with harringay cctv on their front. They were on a radio checking something or calling through details. Was this the new anti litter org picking up an unsuspecting commuter dropping their cigarette before they went down the station?

I hope so!

I saw someone get a ticket for dropping a butt outside the entrance to Shopping City yesterday, so probably yes.

The guy I saw looked extremely sheepish and as if he had never been told off before in his life. Felt sorry for him !

I find this quite disproportionate. Rubbish from overfilled commercial skips blows around behind shopping city all the time. Fly-tipping hardly risks anything. Casual dumping of furniture by the roadside is a constant feature and yet all that happens is someone merely chucking a fag end of the street gets fined. Its a case of picking on the easy target.

But how do you catch the furniture dumpers? This is broken window theory in action.
Exactly! Also I'm a smoker and wouldn't dream of dropping a fag end on the street so don't see why others should get away with it. Wish they'd do the same for spitting though.
They do in Walthamstow I believe. And other areas with a high incidence of TB. I believe it's quite high in Haringey too...

I agree Philip.

It used to be called fascism, but now that has become so main stream in the U.K. you get people pushing the boundaries even further. It's so Orwellian and yet so many sensible people here still support it. Of course, the answer would be to stop victimising smokers, give people smoking areas by providing areas and rooms* in shopping centres and high streets. But no, the nanny state has pushed smokers out on to the streets with their bans inside and now is capitalising on it.

*I have never been a smoker in my life. But I stand by the freedom for people to smoke if they wish.

There are bins up and down the high street they can put their litter in. At the local authority I work for its enforcement policy only to fine someone where they could have chosen to out their litter in a nearby bin. Yet people would rather throw it down next to the bin.

Why should the rest of us subsidise such a filthy habit?

Look, it's not illegal.. Subsidise? Actually it's the other way around. You are obviously quite happy for smokers to continue to subside the government with their taxes. If it were so bad, then it should be banned completely.

As for emotives like filthy.. I find plenty of things filthy, but I think people should be free to do what they want, as long as it is legal. Which smoking is.

I get pretty tired of generalisations like 'the rest of us' and 'we' - that sounds very much like victimisation to me and remind me very much of what was bandied around in dictatorships..

The government does not pass (enough of) the money on to local government to cover the cost of someone to sweep up all of the butts. I doubt it even covers their increased health-care costs though given that the NHS doesn't seem to be getting enough of it either.

I'm fine with people smoking as long as they are considerate about it, but I don't see why I should pay to clean up their mess when they could easily dispose of it responsibly.
I'm not getting your argument Stephen. It's litter, just like sweety wrappers, burger cartons and free newspapers. What's the problem with expecting people to drop them in the bin rather than on the pavement?
