Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

A couple of days ago I picked up via Charlie Perdios, managing director of Anthony Pepe Estate agents the story of how heartless criminals based in Liverpool Street conned tenants in Wood Green out of £2200 by posing as the landlord of a property that was actually owned by his client.

Charlie explains on his blog how he and the vendor discovered that the locks had been changed on the property when they turned up for a prospective viewing. The criminals had caused no damage to the door or frame and had fitted a new Yale and Chubb lock. The vendor was able to get into the property that was still empty and re-change the locks.

The poor 'tenant' turned up and discovered she could not get into the property and having obtained the vendor's number from a neighbour, explained how she had rented the property and had even signed a tenancy agreement. As for the vendor, it was simply their good luck that they had turned up before the new tenants had actually moved in and was not faced with the unhappy task of having to try and evict them. Both the vendor and the victim have reported the matter to the police.

Are the police advising people involved not to disclose the names of the fake landlords for the time being?

If not, it seems helpful if other people could be warned before they part with their money.

I'm guessing that there might need to be an investigation before they can be named and shamed? A quick google shows that this is one of many types of rental scam, a common one being money being demanded as a 'holding deposit' but the letting never materialises or 'money transfers' .

One awful one I heard the other day was someone who rented a flat and was told they could put their stuff in there but couldn't move in as some 'work' needed. You can guess the rest...on their return their belongings, money and the 'landlord' were gone. This happened in Haringey.
