Can anyone advise me as to wether there are any problems or restrictions on a kitchen side extension on a property on the ladder.

One of my neighbours got planning permission for a single storey side return extension last year so there doesn't seem to be any general prohibition. I suppose it will come down to how your property and the one next door are laid out.

I did one in Tottenham v recently. Issues are the party wall, obviously good to have the neighbour onside, and building regulations. I consulted building control in advance and they were quite helpful.Sue L
