Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Exhibition of works by pioneering textile artist Althea McNish: Colour is Mine at William Morris Gallery

Born in Trindad, pioneering textile designer Althea McNish lived in West Green Road in Tottenham for over 50 years.

She was the first designer of Caribbean descent to achieve international recognition and her vibrant botanical textiles had a transformative impact on mid-century design in the 20th century.

William Morris Gallery in Walthamstow are putting on an exhibition of her work beginning 2nd April until September.

Some of Althea McNish’s most famous works will be on display, including designs made for Liberty, Dior and Conran that demonstrate her astronomical success as a commercial designer. These will be accompanied by experimental fashion fabrics, lavish wallpapers, screen-print designs and a Trinidad carnival costume from 1969.

I have also attached to this post a retrospective written by Deborah Hedgecock of Bruce Castle Museum which holds some of her work in their collections.
