Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

two years ago I was persuaded by Everest salesman to have new window (which I couldn't really afford at the time. I was offered a huge reduction in priuace if i signed up to Barclats Partner Finance. I agreed to s.o. and when I got the account one year later i saw I owed far more than I'd borrowed i.e. Barclay Partner Finance operate loan shark terms. Everest are prowling round the nighbourhood again so watch out if they try to sell you a 'dealt'.

Yes, be very careful with this lot. They'll show you a price chart and then will say something ridiculous like "the full retail price for your one window would normal be £3,000 but I'm able to offer you a significant reduction and give them to you at £800 each...." which is utter b@llocks. They're very good at playing on the desire to get a bargain. Most double glazing salesmen do the same really.. And once you've been visited by a few you'll realise they're all selling roughly the same thing for roughly the same price.

Sorry to hear you've been caught out by them... Worth reporting to trading standards or the or the financial services authority who will be regulating the loan company if they're legit..?
Many years ago I invited (!) a salesman from this same company around. When he first came in he wanted to make himself at home and looked ill at ease when he couldn't sit down (absence of chairs). I even offered to measure up the windows then and there while he waited, but all he wanted to do was go through a set presentation routine.

All I really wanted to know was the price – but that was literally the last thing he wanted to talk about. Eventually he said that he had other appointments to go to (I nearly said that he mustn't keep them waiting). He then left. A complete waste of time.

Everest gave their 'price' at the time of around £3000 for one large window. I didn't have that money and they were quick to offer a 'deal' in which the window would magically only cost 1600 if I took out an instalment plan with them. Anxious to 'do domething' about the window and hard up I didn't read the small print and only got the account a year later which revealed the loan shark terms. My error! But I want to let others know when Everest is on the prowl and am contacting the Ombusman about Everest selling practices.

This is commen practise. It is done so they do not waste their time selling to a person only for their husband/wife/partner o comw back from work and wonder why this was agreed on without their knowledge and turn around and cancel the contract. It's about time saving by ensuring all parties are on board.

I personally believe this is good practice.

Ah the good old days, back to when a woman could not get a loan without her husband's guaranteeing it. If she had no husband, her father would do.

I'd love to hear how they phrase that question now we have the Single Equalities Act.

They are also lying about plastic windows in conservation areas. They're absolutely not allowed, despited what the salesperson may tell you on the doorstep.

Some of our box sash windows were rotting and falling apart, with the danger that the glass would actually fall out. But I dread the uPVC replacements, and didn't want to spend thousands on replacing windows in rarely used rooms, especially as apparently now, all new windows have to be double glazed?

We had a lovely guy come around (recommended by Muswell Hill Joinery in Hornsey), and he gave them a new lease of life. 4 windows re-vamped with draft proofing measures for under £400. Took him a day and included parts (wood, string, other bits) and labour.

My advice, if you think your windows are falling apart and need to be replaced, try getting them looked at by a skilled tradesman. We were pleasantly surprised at the improvement and the relative low cost. Even without heating the room, it's at least 6-7 degrees (C) warmer, which can't be bad!

For sash window refurbishment, I'd recomment Ventrolla (www.ventrolla.co.uk) and if you have to go either the uPVC or Aluminium doubleglazing route, then I'd heartily recommend Wembley Windows (www.wembleywindows.co.uk), a small family firm in an railway arch at Staples Corner who recently made me a fantastic alu French door for my new kitchen.  Their prices were so much better than Everest or any of the big companies and they delivered way more quickly too.
