Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

These flowers have been coming up (as weeds) every Autumn in parts of my garden.

Eventually they go to seed and die.  If I don't pull them up, I have noticed that gold finches are particularly fond of the seeds.  Here is the flower and a finch.  A more general view of the plant is attached.

Don't prune the lavender either Dick.

I shall try to remember this but my previous efforts to grow lavender have been shamefully unsuccessful.

Thank you for letting us know this Dick a friend has many visiting her garden. She told me to to get niger seed for them they love this black seed and so I have a special bird feeder of niger seed for them. . xx

I had heard this too, so a while ago I bought some niger seed and the *very next day* had goldfinches.  But then haven't seen them since.

Buying these seeds is probably a better way of attracting the birds than growing evening primroses.  They take quite a while to dry up enough for the seeds to be easily accessible and all that time they look rather untidy.  Most of my gold finch photos were taken in February or March!
