Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Following on from Alison P’s post about plastic bags:
http://www.harringayonline.com/forum/topics/dramatic-solution-to-the
HOL are considering producing shopping bags to promote shopping in Harringay and for the use of re-useable bags instead of the thousands of low quality blue plastic bags that are thrusted upon us on a daily basis.

HOL wants to produce a good quality, reasonable sized and reasonable priced shopping bag. I rekon we could sell them at around £1.50-2 if produced in bulk. We would hope that some of the shops would stock these to give people a choice.

There’s a few designs here, what are your general thoughts, any favourites or suggestions?

Nice work, Birdy.
'8' is my favourite as it conveys the most without being too 'busy', with the emphasis on "Shop Local", "Recycle [bags]".
With you AJ on this. I like 8.
I like the idea and 8, 6 & 2 in that order as well..

It's a shame that there's not an all 3 'recycle - Green Lanes - Harringay' combination.

BUT, even so, great work!
5 & 8
oops sorry.. I now see that there is a 3x combination.. Was it always there? If so I must be going blind.. :o) then 8, 7, 6
It would be odd seeing people walking down Green Lanes with Local Ho bags, number 4 : )

I am going to move forward on these canvas some local traders on their opinions and whether they would stock them.

Thanks all for your input.
Great Birdy. What do you think about the idea of applying for MTD funding? Long shot, but would mean we could give them away for FREE!!

I'm obviously the odd one out on the bag front - 8 looks a little too busy for me; I prefer 7!

And yes, let's avoid the local ho one!!!
We can finalise two and go from there. Option 8 can be spaced out a little to give elements breathing room. It all depends on the printable area. My wife had the same comments about 8 as yourself.

MTD funding would be great, I think this may be on the agenda at the next meeting after we finalised the constitution. We can order a few of these and get more printed should the demand be there.
To go off in a different direction... how about making this a Totally Local project? Open it up as a competition for everyone, and invite people to be creative and send a photo of their design to the HOL website – perhaps a Harringay Shopping Bags Competition album on the Photos page? This way everyone can see the entries online and vote for their favourites (there must be a way of doing this???). Invite the local schools and youth groups to design bags too - this way, local people could get involved in a local project and can be creative from home or school (so there’s no big effort or cost required in turning up somewhere in person). Could we also find a local manufacturer - maybe Mr Pantelli at Pantelli's sewing machine shop might be able to recommend a local person/organisation? And then launch the totally local bags at the Harringay Festival. Maybe even have a bag-design/bag-making stall at the Festival too, and encourage people to design and make their own bags?

I think the harringayonline tag should be written along one edge of the bag so that www.harringayonline.com is VERY CLEAR.
Birdy Too - I'm sorry, I didn't mean to ignore you, but to say thank you for getting the bags project going - whichever design(s) make it. Good luck!
Nice bags - but why are we not doing more to encourage shop owners to use paper bags instead of plastic. They seem to manage this much better in America so I cant see why it wouldnt work here.

Of course the point being the paper bags can all be recycled - so pretty sustainable.

To be honest, nice as the bags are (1 & 5 my favourite) I already reuse sainsbury's bags for my monthly shop, so it would only really be replacing something I already use - with a nicer design.

I think on that basis people may be less enthusiastic.

However, I'm very aware that I am playing the pessimist here, so I really hope it works, and I'll definately pick one up if I see one!
It might be an idea to get Dasos (our area's council Community officer) involved if people are wanting to attach a wider remit at this stage to this local bag for life project. Also involve the leader of the local Trader's Assoc.

This will mean more time. It maybe worth it though because it'll add more weight to a Make the Difference funding bid to finance printing of these bags.
