Could be they are hanging on for Candlemas, 2nd Feb, when BabyCheesus was presented to the Temple and his mother was no longer unclean. There's some accounts of the xmas feasting that went on till then. If you were shut indoors in the cold with the food running out, make a party, good tactic.
Or Imbolc, on 1st Feb - halfway between the solstice and the spring equinox, an important pagan date. Seed sowing begins then.
Are the lights paid for by traders, thats another ancient tradition.
By the time they are off and gone, it will be time to put them back up again no doubt. May as well leave them…..
