Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Can anyone recommend any good doctors surgeries in the area of Green Lanes/Seven Sisters? I've been registered with both Chestnuts Park and The Laurels in the past and have found them to be utterly useless, I can never get an appointment when I need one, they won't do repeat prescriptions unless you go in in person (and even then require checkups every 6 months) and their opening hours are utterly incompatible with anyone who has a full-time job, I'm at my wits end! Would you recommend your surgery?

Avoid Bridge House like the plague! Appalling! If you look back at previous posts about local practices you will see plenty of negative reviews about them - mine included!

I have the misfortune of being at Bridge House and to recommend the surgery to anyone is nil. I haven't attended the surgery in nearly a year due to when you become ill you phone on the morning of the day or the afternoon of the day and it is impossible that you will get seen on the day of phoning. For seeing a doctor in advance you have to wait a month to be seen. I instead of seeing the doctors at the surgery go to the Minor Ailment Scheme that I am signed up to which is fantastic.

Any particular reason?

I've been at Bridge House for about 6 years and never really had problems. For a non-urgent appointment recently, I waited about 3 weeks but that wasn't an issue. For an urgent appointment you ring from 8:30am and leave brief details. A doctor will call you back in the next hour or 2. When we've been in this situation we've usually had an appointment in the next couple of hours but once I just had to pick-up a prescription.

I've been with the Bridge House practice since before it was in Bridge House (1989). My wife, her elderly mother (died in 2012 at the age of 92) and I have all used the practice. It is, indeed a very busy practice. However, the "triage" system described above works well. You ring in the morning between 8.30 and 10.30, and you will get a call-back by around 11am by a doctor or nurse, to assess the urgency of your condition. If you need a same-day appointment, you can get one late morning (they close 1-2pm) or in the afternoon. The doctors are excellent, especially Dr Haas, Dr Ferrer and Dr Brothers, all of whom have been there a long time. Yes, they are very busy, but they always have time to discuss health issues properly, and are very quick to make referrals (for example, to a hospital consultant) and willing to chase them up if there are delays. It is true that if you are presenting with a condition which is completely non-urgent, you might wait 3 weeks for one. But all this is a function of there being a shortage of GPs in the area, the practice being very busy, and the local population (due to poverty etc) having complex medical needs. They also, for regular repeat prescriptions, have a system where you can email in your request; and a number of the local pharmacists will arrange pick-up of prescriptions, fill them and deliver to your door. We always use DP Mark on Green Lanes, near the Salisbury, where the pharmacist and other staff are excellent.

And avoid Dr Abida Ansari, 618 Green Lanes. She's one of the worst doctors I've ever encountered - and I've seen some shockers.
You might not be in catchment but I live on north end of the ladders and go to the vale practice in crouch end. They are the best I've experienced in london by a long way. Have you looked at the nhs choices website - that's how I found them

I've been at Bridge House for about 14 years and I highly recommend them. They are very busy and of course have different procedures for urgent and non-urgent appointments. From being 100% fit both my husband and I now have developed serious health issues (me MS wheelchair dependent) in that time (we are 50ish). The receptionists are wonderful and I only know Dr Ferrar and Curtin who are great but I am sure the other doctors are too. The only 'bad' thing I could say is there is usually a long telephone wait but that depends on the time you call. I expect a long wait now anyway and it doesn't really bother me if I have a cup of tea and the speakerphone turned on my phone. Lastly, to give you an idea - I emailed my repeat prescription and when I called to check that it was ready (48 hours is the minimum time), the receptionist offered to drop my prescription to the nearby chemist MedChem for me. Now I call that first class!

Lawrence House Surgery on Philip Lane is a well established, medium sized teaching practice in South Tottenham.
