Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

And if so, how has it affected you?

I think those of us that do have a unique experience of what's it's like to live on the Harringay Ladder. We are the eyes and the ears of what really happens.

I'm really interested about this. I would like all the walls along the passage to be maintained by the council, in lovely red brick like there is alongside North Harringay School. I think that living alongside the passage has problems with security but benefits for landlords who want to build a flat in their backyards with side access via the passage.

Also, why so many double fronted houses alongside the passage? Was the accommodation for the sewer under the passage made after the lots had been drawn up for auction?

What a great topic! I want to hear from others, too.

I absolutely love living on the passage- never a dull moment. It's quite interesting to see and hear all kinds of people using the the passage night and day. People tend to congregate just in front of our house... sometimes some not so respectful types, but they eventually move along.
The downside is safety, of course. The second day after we moved in the police knocked on our door and wanted to search the back garden for drugs that were possibly thrown over our wall during a chase. Lovely welcome to the Ladder! A couple of times we have seen thieves use the passage for a quick escape. Oh, and we were woken at 3:30 am last night by extremely bright blue police car lights out front which lit up our entire house. Drug dog sniffing all around our front garden. Lots of excitement. Is it always like this??
Anyway, we have CCTV and just enjoy the show from inside.

Seriously, I really like living on the passage for all of it's benefits and seeing the cross section of the people traveling along is very interesting! Not being attached on one side is quite nice, too.

Oh yes Para.  We hear and see the Good the Bad and the Ugly!

This evening's example was shouting and swearing between a couple, something to do with a dog?? and the man saying something along the lines of we could have sold it if you had been quicker.

Nice.

Do you see me on your CCTV?
Haha no, it is just pointed at our front walk.. Inside the gate.
I live alonside the passage. I think the larger houses were used to fill in the gap between the standard types that they used elsewhere on the streets, they used a wider type to fit in whatever space was left. Mine is wider at the front, but not double fronted, and the return/extension is at an angle because the passage is at an angle, so my entrance hall is extra wide. Great for bikes and buggies.

I am ambivalent about the traffic on the passage, some of it can be quite loud, and some bad language for my children to hear, and one of their bedrooms overlooks the passage at the rear.

Yes, the police have been around fairly often, but we haven't had much trouble.

I would like the passage to be better maintained by the people who own houses along it, there is one house that is being done up and it has razor wire along the passage wall, which just looks like a prison fence, I hope its temporary. Other people have really bad walls with broken glass on top. I have a trellis and roses, the police say that this is a good way to keep a boundary safe as a trellis isn't strong enough to climb over, and the roses are a nuisance to climb through, and it looks nice!
I think that the passage should be made more continuous, and there should be a crossing at every street directly in line, so cars have to stop and pedestrians have priority.
I would also like to extend the passage at the end across between Umfreville Road to Lothair road. It would mean a small bridge across the railway line, but it would mean that we could walk straight to Finsbury Park. I'd like a new entrance to the Park at the end of Venetia Road to finish it off, but first things first.

Not sure if any of you are aware but there is a relatively new Friends of the Harringay Passage group that meets regularly and was behind the recent survey to identify attitudes to the Passage. We meet every month (the next meeting is on Weds at 7pm at the Falkland Road Centre (by the school)).

If you are interested and have views, would like to get involved in maintaining and improving the passage environment then feel free to come along and get involved. We hope to see the results of the survey at the coming meeting (?!?!)- if we have them back from the council.

Just to say that we do have the results and I'll present them at the meeting. There are some very interesting and useful findings.

We had a great response too - over 850 questionnaires were returned.

Hello,

First of all, sorry for jumping here with my question, I don`t know if it is the right place and second, excuse my broken english as it is not my tongue language.

So, the problem is I live on Fairfax road and I take daily my little one to school, NHP and I`m disgusted by the mess in the passage between Fairfax and Falkland, plus the dog mess that is on the crossing  by the school and in front of houses no 62-64, on school`s side. This is going on for so long and I kept reporting it to the council for atleast 6 months or so. There is a dog owner that is not cleaning after their dog, and believe me it must be a big dog as there are huge fresh loads every morning I take my daughter to school.

I keep calling the council and Veolia Haringey to come clean it and take some action to find the dog owner that is so iresponsable but as this morning they asked me if I know the name of the person? Really? They think I stay on the street 24 h and I don`t have a family and home to look after? Plus how am I supposed to know the name of all the people in the area?  After arguing with me that she can`t log in the problem, the lady hung up on me after 15 min on hold, trying to find out what could I do?

As far as it states on all the posters on lamp posts in the area, there is CCTV? Are they using it? Plus I know there is a neighbourhood team? Are they doing anything about it?

Is that hard to check the data from CCTv and take action against this person?

I really am disgusted about this problem and don`t know what more can I do as my calls and emails don`t have any result?
