Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

These little black boxes have been appearing on telegraph poles on our road. Do you have them in your road?

I've heard that they might be full fibre cables being installed in readiness for the analogue landline switch-off in about 18 months (Thank you, Dermot).

Thoughts?

I was involved in this rollout but now long retired and a bit rusty on new procedures/products etc. It looks like a fibre manifold (local distribution box) that's been temporarily taped with plenty of slack cable for its eventual fixing to the top of the pole. Not sure why they did it this way rather than doing it in one go.

So, I am currently paying a huge amount to Virgin for three services, for which I only use the broadband and I am keen to shift, but I was rather hoping full fiber options will be available from other providers to get some competition going...

Do we have any info on time scales?

My reluctance to change to BT now is that I am uncertain of the quality or location of the copper cable coming into the house. We moved in 20 years ago, and it looked rubbish then. If I switch will BT come and put a new cable in for us does anyone know?

I came across this link the other day.

The Better Internet Dashboard is a tool designed to understand the local fibre deployment situation in your area within the UK.

This map tool reveals the names of a number of providers who seem to be slowly rolling out service in our area. It might be worth looking at. I registered interest with Community Fibre.

I spoke to someone from Hyperoptic who was working on Seymour late last year. They said it could be April/May but I checked the website recently and there's no hint at availability. Haven't seen any other activity from them lately either.

Am also considering a switch from Virgin when other services are available. Either that or hoping to force them into giving me a significantly better deal.

I had a visit today from a man from Community Fibre who told me that the new black boxes on our telegraph poles are theirs, and did I want to sign up? And a flyer through the post last week gives their website as communityfibre.co.uk if you're interested.

The ones by us are community fiber. They’ve been installing for a while. I signed up straight away. Finally an alternative to being fleeced by virgin

Surely you mean La Rose boxes...

My area already has full fibre, & so I am no longer using any analogue signal. The main downside is that no landline phone will work in a power cut unless with battery back up.

Roslyn Road (N15 5JB) was installed on 30April but still not fully assembled and service is not active.

The answer I got from CommunityFibre yesterday; 29Aug23

"I have checked your address and we are still only halfway through the completion of our works and are still awaiting any sign-offs, and quality checks to be made and then we will move into the build phase. Therefore I recommend registering your interest on our website and you be informed once we become available"
