Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Disney's: A Clue to the Past

I was walking up GL earlier and saw what looks like work on the Disney's sign as part of the regeneration. It looks like there are at least 3 other older signs behind the one we see today, would love to know a bit more about them...I know Disney's is an old business, but I guess it has not always been at this location?

Yes, I noticed that last week. If I had to guess what those letters spell, I'd have a stab at Whittard (Could it have been Whiitard's of Chelsea?). Disney opened at the shop in 1913. In 1903 Hughes were trading there. I guess it's possible there could have been another trader there in between.

Their website says they moved into that premises in 1938, which allows a bit more time...

Thanks Sarah. I was just running on the 'in Harringay since 1913' story and never bothered to check if they'd moved.

I just googled trade directories for that period and there was a "Whittington Brothers, house furnishers" at that address in 1914, so it's been a furniture shop for a good hundred years, even if not Disney's.

I couldn't get the link to work, but it's Kelly's Directory of Middlesex 1914, p218.
