Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I had to nip over to Wood Green to help prepare for Mother's Day tomorrow, and I was astounded by the poor cleanliness of the High Road. Remember, this is the borough's main shopping area, but it looks like a rubbish tip on a regular basis. Is this because of the proposed transfer of the waste contract from Enterprise to Veolia, or yet another example of poor management by the council?

Alan, is there any fact in the rumours that Haringey could go to fortnightly refuse collections? If this is the case then the borough's on-going litter problem can only get worse.
See my reply at the bottom of this page for the latest information on that
Thanks, I seldom look on the council's website. I still don't feel convinced that anything will improve though.
Neville, you're not keeping up with your Haringey People ! We'll all be on the fortnightly system within a couple of years. But they're sensibly phasing it in from Muswell Hill 'downwards' (I suppose it's easier "rolling out" something from a height.) There's no reason why the litter problem should get worse for this reason - if recycling is pushed, rewarded, coerced, enforced to the point where the 60% recyclable stuff in the black wheelie is stacked in the green wheelie instead. True, it won't solve the pavement or Duckett's Common litter problems. That requires a bigger stick, preferably studded with six-inch nails - and pavement litter bins with more gaping mouths - and more frequent emptying of said bins. And of course a few generations of education.
I spoke to a council worker collecting litter on Duckett's Common a week or so ago about the state it was in and he said that two of the parks cleansing team had retired a while back and because of the cut backs they hadn't been replaced. He said there used to be 6 of them for the whole borough but now there's only 4, so it was hard to get round all the parks.  He also said it's likely to get worse as lots more parks staff are going to lose their jobs.

Hi Liz

I wouldn’t take it for granted that the street cleaning services will not be cut back. I wonder did the terms of the contract change since the council gave it to Veolia?

Anyway I shouldn’t be so glib with my comments but on the flip side it would be interesting to know how these cuts have affected people throughout the borough.  What are peoples experiences so far?

Hi Con,

I'm sure the terms haven't changed as they haven't started yet and the changeover maybe whats causing the problems but the lack of enforcement officers may mean an end to the recent spate of successful actions on fly tippers and litterers.

I have begun a Cutswatch list but I think the real effects have yet to bite as many of them started only a few days ago or have yet to take affect.

Haven't affected me in the slightest :-)

We'll ask you again in a year John.

Apart from many people losing their jobs which is not something any of us should really joke about particularly as some of those people will be users of this site, at this stage, it will be hard for most people who are not regular service users to see or feel the changes.

I wasn't joking Liz. Con asked  " What are peoples experiences so far? "

That is MY experience so far. I agree with you that it is far too early to ask this question. Also, it's MY experience, which is what he asked for, not my perception of what other people's experiences might be.

Again, it wasn't a joke.

I think many High Streets are like this though, WG is not unique ime but it is unecessarily grubby.

It did get better for a while, post refurbishment back in 2000 and something. It was a short lived thing though,

Why does Amsterdam (for eg) get it right and we don't?

Well, I've just been made redundant after 20 years in local government; one of my neighbours lost his job a month or so ago after a similar length of service and I know lots of people who work in Haringey who are about to lose their jobs too.  Many of them also live in the borough.  Happy days.
