Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Good morning -

Asking for some advice. I found a dead fox cub next to my terrace this morning with its head detached / torn off (??). The council does not collect dead animals from private property; only from public spaces. Any suggestions on who to call to dispose of it? My handling it is not an option - I can hardly bring myself to look at it :(

Any pointers would be really appreciated.

You should get in contact with SNARL as this sounds like it could be another victim of the individual who has been killing pets and wild animals. There was another post about it all on here. If you can't find it, I'm about to walk my son to school and I can get their number of their notices that are up in Harringay Passage

You need to call as soon as possible the tel number listed here  (07961 030 064 or 07957 830 490) and don't dispose of the body as it will need checking.

Thanks both. Don't think it's related - we are in a mid-terrace and there's no way anyone can have access to our garden (except for our next door neighbours, if they jump the fence!). Could it be more likely that it was killed by a cat or something - ???

The update is that the mom fox just came to fetch the dead body and carried it up to a tree in the back of our garden, where we think she has a den. And then 3 more cubs came out and are currently running around in our back yard! Very confused about what to do - dont know if I should be trying to retrieve the dead cub from the back garden where the mom fox took him to... or leave her to deal with it...

Well give SNARL a call anyway, I'm sure they will give you advice as to what's best. The cub may have been killed and the body then moved by the mother. Many of the attacks appear to have involved decapitation so I would call them.

Thanks Antoinette.

The posters have now gone from the passage but there's a copy of the poster on the original thread on here

The poster says you should also advise the Police.... must be very upsetting for you.

yes, very distressing. followed by an overload of cuteness as there are now 3 fox cubs running around in the garden!

Hi Lydia - it really does not seem related to that incident. We are mid-terrace - there's no access to our garden from any direction.

Sorry Linda, I just realized that for some strange reason I called you Lydia earlier! Apologies, I was clearly being a space cadet!

An update: This is a reply from the National Fox Welfare Society: "What can happen if a cub dies, then the others will eat it, and this usually starts with the head." Really did not know this!

Anyway, the vixen came and retrieved the body and took it up to where we think she has a den. Based on this, I was advised to let the nature take its course.

Thanks for advising us of the outcome Vlatka.

The best general advice to cat owners is to lock the cat flap at night so that cats are safe inside at night as cats are more likely to get lost or injured at night. It's nice for cats to have access to the back garden during the day.

Make sure cats don't get out the front by mistake, due to the danger of cars. It's always best to get cats and kittens neutered and microchipped. If a cat is not neutered or has no cat flap, it is more likely to roam and get lost.

Congratulations on HOL's tasteful coverage of a vulpine wake. Looking forward to the obituary and interview with the vixen and siblings.
