Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hello,

This may be a bit late but Make Votes Matter are running a DAY OF ACTION on Saturday 22nd August.

The idea is to visit a landmark and take a photograph with posters/placards campaigning for Proportional Representation in The House of Commons.

No individual in more than one photograph - Socially Distanced Campaigning!

It is based on an idea used very successfully during the Lockdown by our Lewes Group.

A couple of us are touring Tottenham, probably starting on Friday evening, please come & join us if you can. The more people the more landmarks.

This is taking place all over Harringey so do come & join us or take a photo of your own.

The results to be posted on Social Media & anywhere else you can think of on the 22nd.

The more the merrier.

We are meeting at Seven Sisters underground Station, outside Latin Market/Wards Stores at 4.30pm Friday.

One person per photo, we have placards or bring your own (P.R. only please, we are a non-political movement) no other causes however worthy.

There are a surprising number of recognisable landmarks, the more people the more we can put on Social Media.

Thanks.

Proportional Representation, which you promote with this Day of Action, is a bad system. It has failed to elect strong and stable governments wherever it has been tried. Italy is the bests example of the chaos it brings.

The present system in the UK is very successful and does not need to change. It has produced great governments in the past which have made the UK one of the best run civil societies and economies in the world.

The only party in the last election who support this PR, the Lib Dem Party, were nearly wiped out in the poll. All the other political parties support the electoral system we have now. You are promoting a lost cause.

Various forms of PR are used in the following European countries

Denmark

Finland

Iceland

Ireland

Germany

Luxembourg

Netherlands

Norway

Portugal

Sweden

Switzerland

The List of First Past the Post countries includes strong and stable nations like

Azerbaijan

Kuwait

Iraq

Liberia

Myanmar

Philippines

Yemen

Mr. Anderson above makes a very good point.

Countries with PR generally have a better representation of Women, Minorities, "Green"  campaigners & the electorate generally.

It is no accident that Extinction Rebellion have more branches in this country than any other.

In countries with P.R. there are Green MPs and a fair representation of those issues, there is not such a need.

Surely no-one can call our system stable at the moment.  Over the last few years we have seen Parliamentary Debate reduced to a series of screeching matches which have been broadcast Europewide if not Worldwide, making us look very foolish. If you don't believe me ask someone next time you can get abroad. It can be very embarrassing.

Our streets have been taken over by a form of mob rule, E.R. & the million plus EU demonstrations and latterly the BLM movement.

Each quite legitimately feeling they have points to make, nobody is listening too them and this is the only way they can be heard.

It is reasonable to argue that the whole Brexit debate was a consequence of the failure of the political system to take notice of the electorate's concerns.

Neither of the two (or half a party in the case of Labour currently) can possibly represent all the views & concerns of the now very diverse populace.

They cannot be fitted in to the two corporate entities manifestos.

These recent debates have highlighted this with increasing numbers, who thought they lived in a Democracy coming to think that they don't.

The success of last Saturdays Make Votes Matter "Day of Action" proving this.  With people from all sides, Europhiles, Europhobes, Labour, Brexit, Liberal, Green, non-aligned, you name it; even a  few Tories coming together to show their discontent.

Neil suggests that the current system is proven by the economic success & stability of this country.

That is also a good argument but the social make-up of the country & the changes in the world's economy means that this no longer applies.

No system is perfect but the current one now has few true advantages.

The system must change for us to remain socially & economically successful & stable.
