Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Just arrived:

Dear Ms PamIsh,

We are writing to let you know that following feedback from last year’s consultation, there are some variations for the Crossrail 2 route through Chelsea, Dalston, Hackney and New Southgate.

Transport for London and Network Rail are seeking your views on the revised proposals.

Crossrail 2 is the proposed high‑frequency rail line which would provide improved connections and more transport options through London and into Surrey and Hertfordshire.

For details and to share your views, please click here

This consultation will run until Friday 25 July 2014.

From Monday 9 June we will be consulting again, on proposed changes along the route at these locations. These are:

  • The location of a station in Chelsea
  • An extension from Alexandra Palace to New Southgate
  • The route alignment in Dalston and Hackney

I want to know what 'core tunnel portal' means - south of Tottenham Hale. It looks suspiciously like it's on top of my house.

Umm, yes, the tunnel mouth has to be pretty close to the current line through Tottenham Hale to lead on to a junction south of the station. The least disruptive site would be within the 'railway triangle' of land to the north-east of Markfield Park, I'd guess/hope. If so, there's a strip of land to the east between the railway and Yarmouth Crescent that might also be used for a southbound line.

Yes, the land to the north-east of Markfield Park is fingered by this analysis in a local blog, Crossrail 2 emerges on our doorsteps? Does anyone know if serious consideration has been given to the tunnel emerging north of Tottenham Hale? That would seem more suitable – industrial area, railway sidings, etc – but presumably having an subterranean station at Tottenham Hale would add to the cost.

Flood plain?

That land NE of Markfield is all the warehouses full of artists + such, as well as industrial +storage  sites.

Claire Kober's take on it here.

'“We’ve always been clear that the regional route would open up our borough and unlock regeneration in Tottenham and Alexandra Palace, and it’s great to see plans moving forward.'

Why does EVERYTHING have to be about 'regeneration'??? Why can't this just be about adding to the civilisation of people living here? Or even, pleasure? If I live long enough (to 2029) I'll be able to go to Ally Pally in one journey. Isn't that enough?  It will make that crammed train/ tube journey less horrible for 1000s of people - isn't that enough, without it being a short-cut to add 1000s more?  ('Regeneration' to the Kober Kabal is not about what it literally means - it's about slash+burn and building new for-sale flats.)

*takes fingers out of ears*

Yes, quite.

As if it wasn't enough, the back advert on today's 'Haringey People' is for riversapartments.co.uk ["Live the high life"].....

I spoke to a rail worker near the chocolate factory and he said most of the ally pally cross rail infrastructure is already built and it showed that all this politics about whether it should go ahead or not is all guff.

A new depot between Hornsey and AP is on its way, but that's for the Thameslink expansion over the next 4-5 years, rather than a separate late-2020s-at-best Crossrail 2, I believe.

The original plans were scaled down, though - if you or your rail worker can define substantial unused space for further expansion, then perhaps it's possible.

He was about 55 in full rail uniform, could have been talking out of his arse. I just presumed someone working on the building would have had a semblance of what they were doing and why. But hey ho.
