Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Thank you to Councillor Hakata for his support with my Rogue Roofer - see my previous post. He was not able to assist me with getting my money back, but was able to help with the subsequent issues, which resulted from this fraudulent experience.

It was good having a Representative listening and understanding my turmoil, despite being extremely busy with his Council duties. It was appreciated.

Hi Ozbawn

Just saw your question. I can answer it!  There is a system called Member Enquiries. When I do casework, I copy them in as required - they log it and chase/ensure a reply from the relevant service. This should be  provided within 10 days. Lots of authorities have similar systems.

I chase my casework and do my best to keep on top of it. I work hard to resolve problems but sometimes issues are systemic e.g computer problems which need solving as they affect loads of people. I think a key task is to analyse the problems coming through Member Enquiries to see trends, issues , systemic problems etc . This would help pinpoint changes which are needed. I have raised this and will do so again!

Best wishes

Thanks Zena. It would great if those trends are published. It could be a useful addition to the Haringey quarterly magazine.

Alan — Useful insight and good questions. What I remember most from the manifesto of one of the successful candidates was a continuing commitment to re-naming Black Boy Lane, estimated in last year’s council meeting minutes to cost at least £180,000, money which is to be taken from existing budgets (presumably those for less important things such as housing, social care or homelessness). So you can rest assured that we’re in safe hands if they’re elected.

Don, people have strong principled and often conflicting views.

There's a clever insightful, funny, well-written radio play about Covid vaccine refusal.
It does what I recommend about many such conflicts and apparently puzzling behaviours.  Puzzling that is, to many people but not everyone. Examples might range from rubbish dumping to creationism.

What's my usual response?  Engage. Ask them. Talk to them with as open mind as possible. Listen carefully and learn. Try to imagine and understand - as Anarchists say - where the shoe pinches for the wearer. Then modify your own responses. Look for a way "through" or "with".

The radio play is: From Fact to Fiction= jabber jabber. By Mark Lawson.

Yes, I’ll give it a listen. I take your point about engagement, listening and understanding others’ concerns; I also appreciate, though, that a council has to rank its priorities against available budgets, which is what bothers me here. If the change to BBL cost, say, a few hundred pounds for new nameplates and some labour, maybe it would be reasonable expenditure (without getting back into arguing the rights and wrongs), but I find it hard to believe it’s the most pressing need for £180,000 to be spent in present circumstances.

Former councillor Ray Dodds worked coaching Rugby Union.

He told an anecdote about  a training session which asked for comments on a photo of the Australian team defenders. Following remarks on the lines of "built like a brick shithouse wall", the coach leading the session suggested focusing instead on ways around and gaps through.

Old proverb:: "They give you only two conflicting choices. Seek a third.”

Well done to the 101 members of the Labour Party in Harringay that participated in the selection meeting last night. A far cry from the 9 people in attendance for the 2010 local election selections.

Perhaps if more had turned up in St Anns they might not have been able to deselect two very competent local councillors with just a handful of people.

I’ve no idea how many members there are in St Ann’s, but just over 50 were on the Zoom for the shortlisting meeting, which chose two existing councillors (Hakata and Davies) plus three others; the subsequent selection meeting had around 75 participants — rather more than a handful — so the inference is that the extra participants may have been supporters of the two candidates actually chosen (one of the extra three on the shortlist withdrew before the selection meeting). However, without knowing what proportion of the membership 75 represents, it’s impossible to say if deselection could have been avoided and whether it was the result of activism by a particular group or the inertia of those who didn’t turn up.

I believe Noah Tucker, currently suspended from the party, made some heartfelt phone calls to St Anns members between the short listing and the selection meeting seeing if some would change their minds. Perhaps some did, perhaps a small handful was the difference between being selected, and not.

A big and heartfelt thank you to everyone who came to the selection meeting last night. I really  appreciated the effort people made to get into the meeting, and I am delighted to be selected to be a Labour candidate in Harringay ward for May's election.
