Chatting with my neighbour the other day, the now trusty old topic of the new waste collections came up.
She was unhappy about the size of her outside food recycling bin. She felt it was too small. It was overflowing. She pointed to mine and said, "Look yours is twice the size of mine. Howcome I got such a small one?"
I promised I'd check for her and order her a bigger one - except of course it wasn't that simple.
After an initially tortuous conversation, I found out that the new smaller bins (left above) like my neighbour's had replaced the bigger bins like mine. Bins of approximately 55 litres had been downsized to 30 litres. Apparently the change was made because people weren't producing sufficient quantity of food waste to warrant the bigger bins.
Given the drive to increase recycling, it sounded like an odd piece of planning to me. So I questioned the situtaion further and asked for formal comment. Here's what I was told.
A Haringey Council spokesperson said:
“Veolia has not changed the size of the food recycling bins. There are currently two sizes in circulation as the larger food recycling bins were provided to households when the recycling service was run in-house.
“However, following a review prior to Veolia taking on the waste contract, the food recycling bins were made smaller as the previous bins were judged to be too large given the amount of food waste being recycled.
“We do still have some larger bins still in stock which can be provided. Alternatively, residents can receive a second bin. Please call Veolia on 020 8885 7700 or enquiries.haringey@veolia.co.uk to request new bins.”
I hope not too many of you have the same problem as my neighbour since I was told by the Veolia lads that the larger bins in stock are just a few leftovers hanging round the depot. Call quickly if you want a larger size bin.
All of this of course assumes that you'll get the bin you ask for. The bin I ordered for my neighbour yesterday and was promised today failed to show up. But that of course was of little surprise since I'm on about Day 30, of a 10 day wait for my own new grey wheelie bin.

Two food bins!!! The bloody Daleks really are invading.
If it helps reduce waste maybe it's not a bad thing?
This is not an earth-shattering issue, but it's certainly an oddity. This move is completely at odds with the huge increases in capacity we've all seen with all out our waste collection bins. Why double dry recycling and ordinary waste capacities and halve it for food? It doesn't make sense to me.
I'll happily swap my bigger one for someone's smaller one, if they can't get one from the council. As I compost so much at home, I only put out one small bag of waster per week, so could easily trade down.
We recycle as much food waste as we can requested a larger sized bin as far back as 2 years ago. We got no joy and now have to use 2 smaller ones. I would have thought that it would help veolia to supply larger ones where there is a demand as it would make the collection more efficient for them to collect from one bin, as opposed to two...
Maddy, if you still have your big one please let me know and I will happily do you a swap!
We've not had a waste collection here for 4 weeks - our food waste bin is full and stinking. I emailed vioela 3 weeks ago to tell them but had no reply. Anybody got any ideas what to do now bearing in mind the bin is completely full and has a million flies ? ? ?
After several promises when i called/emailed last week and this week they finally emptied the food waste yesterday. That's nearly a month !
