Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Following my consideration on the origins of West Green's Black Boy name back in the summer, Haringey Council has decided to rename Black Boy Lane in West Green.

The Council have called the exercise  a 'renaming consultation', but the online questionnaire offers only the ability to choose from a shortlist of two new names. So it appears that the decision to rename has already been taken with only the choice of name left to be decided.

They have issued the following press release.

The council has launched a renaming consultation with residents and businesses located on Black Boy Lane, as part of the wider Review on Monuments, Buildings, Place and Street Names in Haringey – which was launched on 12 June 2020, in response to the Black Lives Matter movement.

The council believes that the names of our monuments, buildings, places and streets must reflect the values and diversity that we are so proud of in the borough. One of the street names that has been identified as not being reflective of this is Black Boy Lane.

Meanings change over time, and the term “Black Boy” is now most commonly used as a derogatory name for African heritage men.

As part of the consultation, the council is asking residents to consider new alternative names that celebrate some of the borough’s most notable influencers, and truly reflect the borough’s rich heritage.

The two names that have been shortlisted for residents to consider are, ‘Jocelyn Barrow Lane’ and ‘La Rose Lane’. The consultation will launch today, Monday 28 September and will run for a period of 4 weeks to Monday 26 October 2020.

Letters will be arriving on Black Boy Lane residents' doorsteps this week, who can respond to the consultation using one of the following methods:

If Haringey residents have concerns or queries about place, street or building names in the borough, please get in touch. Send your views to Leader@haringey.gov.uk.

So if the result of the consultation is that most people want the name changed, even if the majority of those responding do not live on BBL, you’ll happily accept that?

Streetnamer streetnamer rename my street
Loan me a Lane
A place nice to meet
It's gotta sound sweet

Streetnamer Streetnamer
Look through your list,
For something you missed
And find us the perfect name

Streetnamer Streetnamer
To you I'll be loyal
Windsor or Sandringham?
A touch of the royal
Or at least somewhere posh
So my friends will say Gosh

Streetnamer Streetnamer
Can we pretend
We live in Crouch End
Or maybe East Highgate
For I'm longing to be
The envy of all I see.

Majoritie of bothe is fair

Even though SoToBro when the person chairing Tottenham Labour Party at the time emailed its approx 2,500 members asking them to vote to support the name-change in the consultation? I assume you read it? If not it gave an entirely one-sided viewpoint - not mentioning that some residents disagreed.

No need to change our lane i think. Its not racist atall

If uncle joe wants it he needs proper consulting that prooves most peopl on the road agree first and most peopl in haringey to

Proper prosess first

Fools idea

Not sure why the Windsors were so nervous about how young Archie Sussex might turn out. He could have a Tottenham Lane named after him a few years from now. Uncle Joe, please note.

Just to reassure us, OAE, have you booked your post-Covid trip to Oprah's back garden for your tell-all interview?

No, Alan. Her Maj has forbidden it. She says, 'You lot already have a Hewitt Road on the Ladder. You'll be calling it Ginger Lad Alley next.'

I was thinking exactly that last night.

I heard that some people have set up a crowd funder to give Harry and Meghan a long weekend at the Ritz in Paris with a complimentary driver.

Right. We've had the light-hearted jokey interlude.

It's time for the heavy tread of number and data crunching. This coming Wednesday, 17th March, 2021, at 7.00 pm the Council's Corporate Committee will receive a 79 page report.
Item 7 is "Renaming of Black Boy Lane to La Rose Lane".
(Which might have helpfully had the two words "Statutory Consultation" added in the heading.)

The public reports pack for the Corporate Committee is downloadable from the Council's website here.

There are other interesting topics in the pack. Including an item on the Council's Internal Audit. Many people may not be aware of this function. But as we've seen from press reports on Croydon, it's a vital - if unsung - part of the work of local councils.
