Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Today (on a Sun) a lady claiming she was from the council rang my doorbell after playing loudly with the mailbox lid to encourage us to open the door. I have to say if this was genuinely someone from the council the methods are puzzling. Same lady walked up and down the road with her iPad on Fri late evening. She must have seen me go home and in as she came back up the road to shortly after ring my doorbell at about 8:30pm on Fri! I got home late after work and then shopping. The last thing I want is strangers ringing my doorbell. Obviously I didn't open. Today I confronted her that I don't think it is appropriate to show up at doorsteps and disturb people. She said she just wanted confirmation if these names live at this address since people 'move around a lot'.  I told her the council has got all Information from annual register confirm and monthly council tax payments etc and closed the door.

I've lived in same place for 12 years and get a council letter every year to confirm register and pay council tax obviously every month.

I don't hand out any info to strangers at my doorstep.

Anybody else had this experience lately? Planning to call council to complain and check if this is genuine since I've never heard of this before.

I had a lady couple of Sunday's back ..checking the same .

You did the right thing. And anyone else should do likewise, if they have a similar approach, even from someone who seems to know their name. It's often quite easy to find names online for a particular address.

Surely they should have a Council ID badge if genuine? My upstairs neighbours ignore repeated brown envelopes which are from voter registration, so maybe they do get people to call at weekends to explain what the letter is for?

Sounds quite suspicious. Did she wear any badge?

In my experience in past years, Haringey Council have sent people around at this time of year to check that everyone in the house has registered to vote. I think they use people recruited specially. If she was one of those people, she should have had ID, and you'd hope she would have had some training. And if they're trying to catch everyone, calling outside of normal working hours is probably the way to go.

But it does annoy me when people clatter my letterbox instead of ringing the doorbell!
