Cost of compensation for pothole damage outstrips expendture on road maintenance

Local authorities spent £65million dealing with compensation claims for damaged vehicles and injured drivers in 2007, but the Asphalt Industry Alliance says only £52million was used to fix craters in the same period.

I wonder where Haringey is on this statistic?

The Asphalt industry is part of the problem. The surface that they put on roads is unsuitable for the traffic we put on them. All they do is scrape up the old stuff and put on new stuff. When the romans built roads they did a better job.

Funnily enough I have asked this as an advanced written question for the next Overview & Scrutiny Committee meeting on 20th April at which we will be scrutinising both Cllr Haley and Cllr Bevan's (Housing) briefs. I will let you know the answer to the pothole compensation question when I have it in a few days.
