Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

According to the Haringey Independent, "Councillor David Browne, a former Haringey mayor, gave evidence in defence of Canver during the four-day trial at Wood Green Crown Court.

Speaking after the verdict, he said: 'I’m very disappointed with the outcome but I can’t say much because Nilgun will be appealing the verdict.' "

also Labour Party to review suspension of Cllr Nilgun Canver following c...  Cllr Egan [chief whip] said: “Following the completion of the court proceedings, Cllr Canver's administrative suspension from the Labour Party is now under review. This is a matter for the Labour Party nationally to consider."

Clive, you still haven't answered how the public interest can be proven? If not by the CPS then by whom? You say that the public interest can be judged by "members of the public, such as one finds in a jury". Surely this would mean that every decision to prosecute or not prosecute would either need to be taken by members of the public acting as some kind of quasi-legal body or that the cases would have to go to a to a jury who would then decide if it was in the public interest to go forward with the prosecution. How could the decision be made by the public otherwise? Letters to the press, angry mobs?

Of the two police officers sent back at 3am to bully a statement from her, only one testified and the two witnesses were brothers with perhaps an axe to grind. Plebgate?

Yes Stuart, likely.

It might not be in the CPS interest but it's in my interest not to have a convicted person in our political field or yours

Actually, just look at the characters who go up against David Lammy in Tottenham sometimes, spent convictions almost all of them.

The reason that the CPS finally relented and allowed a trial to take place (after more than a week of badgering from DCI Paul Trevers) was that she was a politician and should be held to a higher standard than a normal citizen. This is actually wrong and for the simple reason that it plays havoc with democracy and government. I fully support the police being held to the letter of the law but this doesn't seem to be the feeling of the judiciary or government.

Of all the local politicians, Nilgun was actually one of the "not a crooks" and not a useless "yes" person who allowed the crooks to thrive. I hate to say it because given a chance I would have voted against her (It's Harringay! Not Green Lanes!) but we will miss her, just wait and see.

The Tottenham Journal's day-by-day coverage of the case goes into more detail than the Haringey Independent (as linked above). It has a post-trial report on the background to the decision to prosecute, which seems to me to be essential reading.

I've since heard that this report is of the negotiations before the trial proper, before the jury was brought in, where Cllr.Canver's lawyer was trying to get the case thrown out before it began.

Home Office Minister Mark Harper has admitted to acting unlawfully in employing a cleaner since 2007.
Will he be charged and prosecuted?
Or is he subject to a different system than Cllr Canver ?

Well at least he resigned.

This is also relevant -

"Although I complied with the law at all times, I consider that as immigration
minister, who is taking legislation through Parliament which will toughen up our
immigration laws, I should hold myself to a higher standard than expected of
others,"

Would that all politicians behaved so honorably.

I've used the lunchtime #AskDCI on Twitter to put it to DCI Paul Trevers that what he did was wrong. No response.

My main point is that the statue on top of the Old Bailey of Lady Justice is wearing a blindfold. Anyone unaware of the significance of this blindfold should not be involved in the law. Under no circumstances should someone be treated differently because of their ethnicity, their gender, their height, their dress sense, their position within the community or ANYTHING. Justice is blind.

Sorry John - a common myth.

I agree with the sentiment but it was Harper himself who felt he should be held to a higher standard, not the Law
