Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

According to the Haringey Independent, "Councillor David Browne, a former Haringey mayor, gave evidence in defence of Canver during the four-day trial at Wood Green Crown Court.

Speaking after the verdict, he said: 'I’m very disappointed with the outcome but I can’t say much because Nilgun will be appealing the verdict.' "

also Labour Party to review suspension of Cllr Nilgun Canver following c...  Cllr Egan [chief whip] said: “Following the completion of the court proceedings, Cllr Canver's administrative suspension from the Labour Party is now under review. This is a matter for the Labour Party nationally to consider."

The suspension was entirely Claire Kober's call, she could have stood behind Nilgun, and in hindsight looks unjustified. Even without the appeal nothing that has happened would prevent Nilgun from standing as councillor again.

I have an FoI request in to see who it was in the Crown Prosecution Service that eventually caved in to DCI Paul Trevers' three requests to have the case tried in the first place. I don't hold out much hope. Anytime I have hassled the @MPSHaringey account on Twitter, which has previously been happy to tweet photographs of DCI Trevers, they have been silent. More fingers in ears, "la la la".

It is desperately sad the whole business. Wishing her well for the appeal.

'Cllr Richard Wilson, who played Victor Meldrew till sadly and fatally mown down by a non-male non-Turkish hit-and-run driver some years ago, told this medium: "It is truly sad that lying-to-police Cllr Canver's lying to police has led to this court case about lying to the police and to her being sentenced for perverting the course of justice by lying to the police. It is a reminder, however, that no one is above the Law about Lying to Police and that Lying to Our Police in particular is a very serious matter of Law which we in  the Haringey Liberal Democrat Party [No Cons or Greens Can Win Here!] believe must be Enforced with the strictest level of Enforcement, whether on Enforcers or on Enforcees. As a Senior Member of Haringey Council's lying Cabinet Cllr Canver was in a position of Trust and Responsibility, both of which rule out lying to the police, and I think all right thinking and May-voting residents will be shocked by what has happened in this episode of a Senior Cabinet Councillor's Perverting the Course of JUSTICE through Lying to the Police."'

So a police officer and two witnesses committed perjury,!!!!!  don't think so

She should be very thankful she got away so lightly, people have gone to prison for less.

I think the point here Stuart is that the CPS did not think it was in the public interest to have this case taken to trial but somone thought otherwise.

I do not comment on this case, but sometimes the best judge of what is in the public interest ... is not a organ of the State, but members of the public, such as one finds on a jury.

So the only way to find out if a prosecution is in the public interest is to take it to trial? The logical conclusion is that every misdemeanour ends up in court with a jury.

Michael, I'm not convinced that is logical. The Police do not seek to prosecute every misdemeanour and never have. Sometimes, but not always, the police's seeking to prosecute is vindicated by the decisions of juries.

But you say that it should not be left to the state to decide whether or not to prosecute. Does that not include the Police?

Make no mistake, all the lawyers I spoke to thought I had my facts wrong and that Nilgun had signed something where she had lied. Things like this just do not get prosecuted. This was all because one Haringey DCI pushed for it.

John it seems to me, that you and Michael may be overlooking something fairly obvious: the verdict of a jury.

Unless I'm mistaken, Michael also overlooks that the Police cannot convict alone: only a jury can do that.

If we were prosecuted for any serious offence, like most, we would probably rather that the evidence were heard, and a decision made, by our fellow citizens. Any system of justice is bound to be imperfect but I believe that ours is the least imperfect going.

Have you read this Clive? On the 10th of June and the 18th of June the CPS said that they would not even try the case. Finally on the 20th of June when DCI Paul Trevers manages to find someone more senior at the CPS (Susan Egan) who agreed to prosecute, the ball begins to roll. They really, really tried hard and pulled out all the stops to do this. It stinks.
