Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Chris Barber and Wood Green Jazz Club
Is anyone still around who frequented the Wood Green Jazz Club in the mid-1950s? I lived at Clarence Road, just a few minutes walk from the club, and it is one of my enduring memories.
Chris Barber is still one of my heroes, along with Louis Armstrong. I'm 82 and have lived in the U.S. since 1993 but still frequently listen to the band on YouTube and on CDs.
Also, is there anyone who attended Glendale Grammar School?

Oh wow Hugh.....not in my imagination then !! What a great find that is and TWO shows at The Fishmongers. What a busy tour schedule they endured with local oft frequented venues listed such as; Cooks Ferry, Hornsey College and a few further afield such as Klooks Kleek, Roundhouse and Ram Jam Club. And in Soho The Marquee and Flamingo which we regularly attended. I had seen Cream a few times in those smaller clubs, never though at the far larger venues. Memories eh though sadly many diminished. What did surprise me was Nov 18th Hoveton Village Hall, (Wroxham, Norfolk). I now live approx 12 miles from there and know how small a place that is. Mind you I saw Jimi Hendrix Experience play in a room attached to a pub The Refectory, Golders Green in one of his early gigs, 1966/7. So many well known musicians mingling in the crowd. Those experiences are a thing of the past, would never witness anything like that nowdays. Thanks Hugh, much appreciated.

I can imagine your excitement at Hugh's find, John. It's amazing how 'local' the big names were in those days. I have a less-than-perfect memory of travelling by bus or train, by myself, to see Little Richard play and sing in a small church hall somewhere - Essex or Hertfordshire perhaps. I remember a wooden floor and an old stand-up piano and a really fantastic performance for just we few locals who were standing around. Did it happen? I think it did but there's no way of being sure.

Oh Good Golly Miss Molly that is quite something Geraldine........Little Richard playing a local church hall ! Can't help but wonder if the piano was his own or resident in the hall ? Can you recall if his backing band was a local set up ? I can imagine the reactions of the older regular hall users were not too supportive of the event. I saw him play a much larger venue (in comparison that is) The Odeon/Gaumont, Edmonton.

Hi John. It was the resident church hall piano I think. Must never have been the same after his foot was up on it. I don't recall a band at all. He was by himself. Awfully fuzzy memory though. That you saw him at the Odeon/Gaumont, Edmonton, is encouraging. At least it confirms he was here!

I lived in Edmonton in the late '50s/early '60's. Wasn't it called the Regal?

From memory Peter I seem to recall it underwent a few name changes. I'm talking about a large cinema on the corner (I think, bearing in mind my above visit was in mid '60s and I moved from area in '72). So I'm not sure.

That's the one - across the road from "The Angel" pub which gave that location its name.

The site is now a Supermarket but I remember going to the Regal in the early 70's to see The Four Tops ( my all time favorite group) I have a feeling it was the Sundown then but old names of buildings etc still carry on if your family used those names.

Wow, I bet those keys had the shock of their lives. Imagine the regular 'Miss so and so' turning up to play 'her' piano for the following Sunday School service. I bet All Things Bright and Beautiful never sounded the same again !!
