I suppose this comes under chat.
Did anyone live in either Kimberley Gardens or Chesterfield Gardens in 1953-60. If so I would like to get in touch to refresh my mind (am now in late 70s) as to some of the people around at that time.
Thank you
Roy Bowker

Hello Roy
I'm 45 and have lived in Haringay all my life as have my parents and grand parents. I seem to remember my nan going to a hall on Kimberly gardens once a week with her dancing shoes and I sometimes went with her, there would be a little bit of dancing and some teas and cake and they would all have a chat , do you remember anything like that ?
We didn't live that end tho we are nearer fins park end.
Hi Bethany,
Thank you for your reply to my post. May I ask you if your friend Mrs Peachey ever mentioned any names of people who lived in Kimberley Gardens? Yes I believe quite a few of the houses in Kimberley had the Anderson shelters, also in a lot of the other Garden roads had them.
Thank you once again.
Roy
Hi again Bethany,
Hope you don't mind me messaging you again on people who lived in Kimberley Gardens in the 50's. I am trying to get together a list of names and what number in Kimberley they lived, so any names that were mentioned by Mrs Eileen Peachey would be very helpful to me.
Thanks for reading.
Cheers Roy
Hi Ed, Soon as I read your name it registered somewhere in my brain. Also the name Roy Saunders comes to mind. No I didnt live in Harringay during the war, I lived in a road at the back of the Arsenal football ground (Elfort Road). I also remember playing in the streets there during the war and also the bonfire up against the brick built air raid shelter on V.E. day. Street party? doesn't describe it.
I went into the printing trade when I left South Grove, and stayed in it till I retired 13 years ago. Some of the guys I worked with, down here in Cornwall also went to Australia and New Zealand. I keep in touch with them on Facebook, and they are very happy to be there. Obviously they are younger than me!
Nice to hear from you Ed and just to throw some names at you from the 50's...Brian Wilkinson, Jimmy Hall, the Pinato brothers and George Sprosson. Most likely more will come to mind later today!
Cheers Roy
64 Kimberley Gdns.
PS I don't remember Tongs, neither does my wife who lived in Rutland Gdns. Can you please give me more info as to where it was? as things like that bug me lol.
I now know where Tongs was, ta for that. We tried to remember other shops along that block after the Salisbury Hotel, but only came up with Pearkes the grocers. Oh by the way, my wife is Irene who went to Downhills Central. We have both been married before and I was introduced to her by my (now) brother in law who I used to work with. Her maiden name was Broardhurst and she lived in Rutland Gardens.
Now for names...Of course Kenny Stapleton who married his long time girlfriend, can't remember her name. I was given some info on him by Rita Smith who has a very good memory and went to South Grove, now lives in Exmouth Devon. How I became to be in touch with her is rather a long story, so will have to wait. Like you Brian Disney also rings a bell but haven't got a face to him. Now, Ralfy Lliftshack I was friends with him on Friends Reunited and he lived in South Africa. A member one of his family told me about him dying, but that was several years ago, a guess would be 8-9 years. Franky Scarfe, Terry Blackwell, Alan Ladd and Billy Davis no, can't remember them at the moment although I will try and think again at some time.
I live near St. Austell, which is 14 miles East of Truro. Got a semidetached in quite a nice area, but nothing special like some of my ex workmates in Australia and New Zealand. However we are quite happy here. I do as much Carp fishing as I can and belong to a syndicate who rent a water near the Eden Project, think you may have heard of it Eddie.
One more memory of life in Harringay (hundreds of them!) You mentioned the Tottenham Royal, yes went there and remember seeing Ted Heath and Ken Macintosh there (also saw Macintosh at the Astoria Finsbury Park), which leads me onto my kind of music. I suppose I am a bit of a jazz fanatic, both traditional and modern up 1990. Do you remember Chris Barber etc at The Fishmongers Arms Wood Green? We used to go there almost every Sunday mainly to see Barber or Alex Welsh.
Well that's it for now Eddie. Will keep in touch.
Cheers, Roy.
Hi Eddie, right have not explained about my jazz taste properly. Up to the age of 18 I was only interested in trad jazz, however when I went into Nat Service i teamed up with a guy who was only into modern jazz. We used to go down the west end (on weekend leave) and eventually into Ronnie Scott's. The rest is history. You could say I was converted to modern jazz, however have now to say I like both and have a very large collection of both types. My last count of C.Ds was 1200 plus 130 vinyl, talking of which I still have my fist jazz LP bought at Doug Dobbel's in Charing Cross Road. "Stan Getz At Storyville" That's enough about music for now.
Oh Jacky Lock, yes he was in my class and I often think of something that happened in woodwork. Jack was telling someone not to hold a hammer half way down the handle as, he said "you will kill the action of hammering" He looked at the teacher for praise and all he said to Jack was "your dad's a carpenter so you should know Lock" Jack said "oh thanks". Funny how things get stuck in your mind, a Eddie? Didn't know he lives near Truro. Do you have any more info about him?
Yes mate heard about St Ann's Hospital, also did the same as you. Remember one of us going over the wall and throwing apples over to someone on the outside! great fun!. No never went to "Yippsisy" at Stamford Hill. The only place up there I remember was the salt beef bar. Went in there one night after darts match, with my now Bro/in/law and who should come in Barbara Windsor and one of the Cray twins!! That of course was well before the Cray's were charged with murder.
Yes have seen the Royal on Google Earth, very sad looking like that and I share you opinion on it. Do you look on Google Earth. I find it fascinating to look through the old places, but don't like some of the changing going on.
By coincidence Eddie, after I sent you my email address, I was reading some of the things to do with Hol, and one of the things you should not do is send your email on things like this public site "chat", so will have to send it by a personal message, when I find out how to!! Don't worry will get it to you soon. Just thought we will be able to post pictures of us "then and now"
Well that is now a bit more up to date with memories, although there are as I said, lots more. Oh no it's not. Did you see my posting about the Turnpike Lane mushroom? And Oh one more thing...looking through our messaging you mentioned Brian Disney, well it's becoming a bit clearer now, but have just thought, have you got any old photo's of the guys who lived around us then?
Cheers mate, catch you soon. Roy
Here's how to send a personal message.
